35 weeks and I've only gained 12 pounds

I'm so worried because I started off at 5'7" 118 and now weigh 129-130. My doctor measured my fundal height and I was measuring even a week ahead but she's scheduled me for a growth ultrasound. I'm soo nervous. How can my baby weigh the average 7-8 pounds at birth when I've only gained 12 pounds?? I know I have 5 weeks left (that's if I go all the way to 40 weeks)... I guess I'm just venting but I am worried!!!!

  • Ditto at (almost ) 36 weeks. If your doctor isn't worried about your weight gain then you shouldn't be. There are definitely worse things.

  • Probably because you lost weight in the beginning.
Just because you aren't gaining, doesn't mean your baby isn't growing. Trust your doctor and what he/she is telling you!
  • I've only gained 13 at 35 weeks. I second @libbylu7.

  • 38 weeks tomorrow, and I've gained a grand total of 5. If you are worried, follow PP's advice and talk to your doctor. Everything will be alright!
  • Has your doctor told you there was a problem with your weight gain? If not, then there's no need to be worried. Your baby's size is not directly related to your weight gain.

  • I'm 34 weeks and have only gained 14 lbs . My doctor says that's great and baby is doing wonderful
  • Stop weighing yourself. Stop thinking about weighing yourself. If doc says baby is fine then baby is fine.

  • I haven't gained any weight.
I would only worry about it if my doc was concerned or if she wasn't growing. My LO is growing just fine. Like others have said if you are worried you need to talk to your doc. It sounds like there isn't anything to worry about right now though. Just think how easy it will be for you to lose the baby weight.

  • I'm 5'8" started at 119 lbs and at my last appointment I was 137. I had 6 weeks to go at the time. My midwife has the mindset that less is better and doesn't give a normal range as long as measurements are on track
  • I'm in same situation but doc said that even though I'm not gaining weight all the nutrition is going to the baby first and then I get what is left over.

  • I've lost 21lbs and have only gained 5 of it back and my baby weighs 6.5 lbs. I'm 36 wks pregnant and had a growth ultrasound on Tuesday and everything was great.

And after reading the title again, and thinking "ok, you want a fuckin cookie or something?" .... I want a damn cookie. Fuck. No wonder I've gained so much.

I've murdered so many damn sugar coated marshmallow bunnies recently, I'm surprised PETA isn't knocking on my door with a can of red paint.
I'm pretty sure Peeps are their own food group and is somewhere on the food pyramid between fruits and vegetables. My diet will be lacking after this Sunday.

Haven't bought the chocolate covered ones, but we bust out our little outdoor fireplace every Easter season and make Peep s'mores. I seriously need to start buying an actual full shipping box of them and keeping them for summertime because they are 1000xs better than regular marshmallows for making s'mores.

  • as pp's said, if doc's not worried then you shouldn't worry.

FWIW, i'm up 42# and IDGAF!!! hide the Reeses easter eggs, because I will eat them ALL!

Also, i spy your cookies, so you'd better hide those as well. And your chips. And any fancy cheese you may be hoarding.
  • I find myself being annoyed by this post. I gained a total of 70lbs with DS1 and so far I'm at 50lbs with DS2. I wish gaining weight was my problem.

I was in the same boat as you at 35 weeks - 12 pounds. Now at 37 weeks I'm at 15.  If your doctor says it's fine, it's fine.

I had my growth scan and my little man is growing just fine. My doctor wasn't worried, so I'm not worried.

ETA - I want a freaking cookie or a sugar-coated ANYTHING. Damned GD.

  • I'm sitting in the parking lot of the grocery store, reading this while I wait for DH to come out with the carrot cake muffins and smoothie I sent him in for. Yum! I'm totally on track for the big 50lb gain and I too am hoping it's a pony. Otherwise, I sure have a lot of post-pregnancy dates with the gym to look forward to!

OP, if you're really concerned about your weight, talk to your OB. It's been my experience that if your weight is an issue, the OB will have said something about it.

  • Don't worry, my mom only gained 14 pounds when she had me and I came out weighing 7 pounds. I on the other hand have gained 45 pounds
  • I just don't get weighed. That way I don't feel bad either way. As long as my BP and peepee are fine, then I don't need to know the magic number. I'm totally gonna go and buy cookie mix now. Oh god, soft warm cookies from the oven. /ded.
