Cloth Diapering

New to CD, Adopted a Stash and I'm Confused!

Okay, Baby will be here in a few weeks and I'm FINALLY getting around to figuring out this CD stash I bought on CL a few months ago.  I don't know what I need and in a lot of ways, I don't quite know how to use what I have.  Here's what I bought:

Newborn Diapers
25 Motherease fitteds
8 Motherease Covers

GMD Size Medium (red stitching)

8 fitteds
5 prefolds

One-Size
16 FB Elite pockets
2 Kawaii Baby pockets

Questions/Confusions:
  • Then I have a ton of liners or soakers, or inserts or I don't know what to call them!  Are they just for the pockets?  Are some of those for the newborn diapers, or do you not need those for newborns?  For washing purposes, does it matter what they're made out of?? Some are smaller, some are bigger, and they feel a little bit different, but I have no idea what they are!
  • I know I need covers for the GMDs-- I was planning on buying one each of Rumparooz, Blueberry, and Thirsties Duo to see what I like.
  • Along the same lines as the first passel of questions- do I put an extra layer in those GMDs as well?  Does it matter what that layer is made out of?  What can go against baby's skin?
  • These One-Size pockets look like a pain in the butt!!! That elastic on the FB, pulling out the insert, stuffing the insert . . . ugh.  What is the appeal of using a pocket? I'm tempted to get rid of them and buy more GMDs!  It just seems like I'll never get the FB to fit right . . . I'm just guessing on what number to put the elastic on right now.
  • Also, Bumpkins Flushable Liners: yay or nah???

Thank you for your help!!!

Molly

Re: New to CD, Adopted a Stash and I'm Confused!

    • If all of your inserts have been used already, they've been prepped already and can be washed together.
    • Microfiber inserts cannot go against baby's skin and should only be used inside a pocket.
    • You can use natural fiber inserts as doublers with fitteds and prefolds if you need them for extra absorbency. You'll know you need more absorbency when your LO saturates a diaper completely in a short span of time (like an hour)
    • A lot of people aren't crazy about the old style FB Elites. The elastic usually isn't the problem; it's that the minky inserts are just not absorbent. The crotch on those is also very narrow and can be hard to stuff. The nice thing about pockets is that they are easy to use once stuffed.
    • I haven't tried Bumpkins liners.

  • Welcome! I'll try to answer your questions:

-All of your diapering items can be washed together. It's prepping where you have to pay attention to the fabric content, but since your stash is used, you're good to go. If you post pics, we can help you figure out the fabric content since you don't want microfiber to go next to baby's skin. Other inserts might be hemp or bamboo which are great if you have a heavy wetter. Pretty much anything can be stuffed in a pocket.

-All of those brands of covers are pretty well-liked and should all work fine with GMD mediums.

-You shouldn't need an extra layer with the GMDs, except for maybe naps or overnight. DD outgrew the absorbency of the mediums at about 18 months old, but most kids don't.

-You'll probably want the elastic of the FBs on the smallest setting at first. But if you don't end up liking them, just sell them. They are kind of a love-it-or-hate-it diaper. But, depending on how old they are they may fit your baby sooner than most OS diapers. Pocket diapers can be more appealing for caregivers, especially if your LO will be in daycare.

-Flushable liners with a newborn are an exercise in futility and unnecessary poop touching.

You'll probably want another dozen diapers that will fit a newborn if you want to wash every other day. With 25, we would have been washing every day and a half as DD easily went through 15 diapers a day for the first 6 weeks.

Also, do you have wet bags and such for dirty diaper storage?

  • Pockets can be a pain to stuff but make quick and easy diaper changes (compared to prefolds, fitteds, or flats with a cover) and you can change the absorbancy (which is harder or impossible with an all in one).

PPs did a good job answering and I agree with what they said

I love our FB elites with the adjustable elastic. Not sure on the style age; they're about a year old now but they're awesome. I wish the color selection was better. I'd have more than six. Their website has a size chart estimation for baby's weight and what number to adjust the elastic to
