Cloth Diapering

Good news!!!! And another stash question.

So when I intro'd I had said we are handwashing, but I talked DH into a portable washer!!!! Yay I'm so excited! So we have very hard water (SoCal) and this is what I was planning for a wash routine: quick cold wash no detergent, hot wash with detergent (turning water to cold for the rinse), quick cold wash, and line dry. Sound good? Right now I have rockin green but want to switch to something else when it's gone. Any suggestions? Any Charlie's users??

My stash question is I have one more shot to get the rest of what I need (earth day) and about $100 left in my budget. I have so far:

12 orange edge GMD prefolds that I can use for stuffing
12 yellow edge GMD prefolds that he still fits
11 various (cheapie) pockets with 2 microfiber inserts each (I'm a total impulse buyer, I couldn't help it!)
2 Nicki's pockets
5 BG AIOS
1 Nicki's AIO bamboo
2 imagine bamboo fitteds
1 imagine OS cover
1 best bottom cover
1 rumparooz OS cover
1 thirsty size 2 cover
1 bamboo flat

2 small plant wise wet bags
50ish cloth wipes
5 snappis
1 diaper sprayer

Okay! So I would like to get at least one more bamboo fitted for ON, and some more bamboo flats just to have. I need 2 pail liners. Other than that how can I finish this off? My DS is 5 months and a heavy wetter/ sensitive to wetness. Thanks ladies!!!!!

Re: Good news!!!! And another stash question.

  • I would recommend a few more Best Bottom covers and some of the inserts- they're great for on-the-go and don't take up much space in a diaper bag. They have a nice stay-dry insert as well.

I would avoid Charlie's. We were fine with it for about half a tub, then LO started to get hives daily. After we dropped the Charlie's the hives have never returned. We use Nellie's mostly, but also Soap Nuts.

  • I do hope that best bottoms are on sale they are kinda pricey. Thanks for the info on detergent! I will look into nellies.

  • Most people seem to do really well with regular old Tide when they have hard water. Stay dry/fleece liners will help with wetness sensitivity.  Maybe another cover or 2.  And I love my Alva bamboo inserts.  They are so trim and would make double stuffing a pocket much easier.

  • @charmingthemoon‌ that is the same brand washer we bought! Good to know it works well. I do have a question though. Why do you do the heavy duty cycle? I'm just curious cause 78mins seems like a really long time. What benefits does it have? Like I said I'm just curious so I can use the information to tweak my routine.

  • If you really want a big bang for your buck, I'd get maybe a dozen birdseye flats, at least 2 bamboo flats or prefolds for ON, and 2 more OS covers.

  • Rocking green sucks (and I'm right in the middle on the hard water test). I use bum genius detergent.

  • Ditto the PP who said flats. If you are line drying they are the way to go. Great for stuffing in pockets. Then you don't have to mess with liners because of wetness sensitivity. And after you've saved a bunch of money because you bought a dozen flats, blow the rest of your budget on 2-3 splurgy diapers. (Actually, hang onto it in case you decide later that you need a beefier ON fitted)
