heart murmur?

At my appt. today, my OB discovered that I have a slight heart murmur. She said a lot of pregnant women get them, but not until later in pregnancy. Has anyone (especially those with prior pregnancies) experienced this during pregnancy?

After Googling stuff about heart murmurs, I'm now recalling that I've had slight palpitations from time to time. Only a few, and they are rare so I never thought anything of it. But they definitely occurred before I was pregnant. I always attributed it to caffeine or anxiety. Now I'm worried I have a more serious heart condition...

On the bright side, my first u/s showed baby measuring perfectly w/ a HR of 133.

Re: heart murmur?

  • I've had little random jumps but nothing that is ever caught by the doctor. My mom has Mitral Valve Prolapse which is hereditary so I'm pretty sue that's all it is. It seems like if she was really concerned she would have sent you to a specialist. I will warn you though, they often won't give epidurals to women with any sort of heart issue. So if you were planning on that, you might want to discuss it with your doctor.

  • I have Premature Atrial Contractions, aka PACs, aka heart hiccups. I get palpitations daily. I was born with them. They are not really a big deal.

But, because of them and my asthma, I am classified as high risk.

Did your doctor order any testing, like a holter monitor?

I get PVCs - premature ventricular contractions - on occasion, usually when I'm super anxious. My doctor isn't concerned, but I sure was when I first started getting them. My heart, the best way to describe it, will sometimes go lub-dub-luhthunk, instead of lub-dub-lub-dub. I talked to my doctor at length about it and he was able to explain what and why it was happening and he had me on the EKG for a bit.

ETA: I wouldn't worry too much, but you should mention it to your doctor if it does concern you!

    Yikes! Good to know...thanks.

@MindyAndRyan - My OB didn't order any testing, but I didn't think to tell her about the heart palpitations when I was at my appt. I was sort of shocked by the heart murmur thing and I haven't had any palpitations in a while. I will talk to her about it at my next appt.
