Cloth Diapering

Someone please hold my hand

Ok, so I have finished my stash and I realized how much laundry I'm going to do to prepare for little one to get here. I almost puked on myself.

I'm a little nervous for some reason to get my prepping and diaper washing done because I don't want to do it wrong.. Please feel free to tell me I'm doing something wrong.

According to the forums, vlogs and information I've found online here is my plan along with my questions, to which I could not find the answer:
1) The OsoCozy Unbleached Indian Prefolds I know need to be prepped by washing them 3-5 times before their first wear (this includes drying). I know I've heard people throw them in the dryer because they are strong enough to withstand that.
Question: Since they are "natural fibers" do I need to continue washing them alone, I assume after they are prepped they can be thrown in with any diaper.
2) The GMD workhorse Fitteds are unbleached so I will give them the same prepping that I do my Prefolds.
Question: Do people also dry these fitteds in the dryer or line dry them? They seem to be made of similar or same material as the prefolds so I wasn't sure
3) All Used diapers, new and used covers and Charlie Bananas will be washed once and line dried before their initial use
Question: Charlie Banana inserts say 4-6 washes to prep them, do you guys dry your inserts in the dryer or line dry them?
4) The Simplex Diapers say on the tag they only need to be washed once prior to use but that the colors may bleed
Question: has anyone had the Swaddlebees Simplex diapers bleed on them the first wash?

And now that I've likely made your head explode here are some cute gifs. Don't hate me

First of all, take a deep breath.  It's not that scary.  All of your natural fibers, including the prefolds and the fitteds can be prepped together.  You can even throw them in with a load of sheets or towels to prep if you don't want to waste water and have a big enough washer.  Once they have been prepped, you can wash all diapers together.
As far as the used diapers, I always washed used diapers once with bleach just to make sure there are no yuckies in there, then do a few extra rinses till they don't smell like bleach.
For the inserts - do you know what material they are?  If they are bamboo, hemp, or cotton, you can prep them with your prefolds and fitteds, and yes, I dry them in the dryer.  If they are microfiber, they just need one wash and dry.
    Did I miss anything?
ETA: Oh, the simplexes.  I am planning to prep mine this weekend as well, so I don't have an answer yet.  Sorry.  But let me know if you have them bleed!

  • Natural fibers get prepped 3-5 times and can be dried. This includes prefolds, Cloth Eez workhorses, and any cotton inserts. The GMD fitteds can be dried along with all of the prefolds.

I don't know what the Charlie Banana inserts are made from, but unless they are a natural fiber, you only have to wash them once before use.

Covers, pockets, and inserts that are synthetic fibers (microfiber, minky, fleece, etc) only have to be washed once to prep. I prefer to hang dry anything that has elastic and PUL to extend the life of the diaper.

Once everything is prepped (natural fibers separately from synthetics), they can all be washed together once in your rotation and used. I still line dry the elastic/PUL diapers, as stated above.

I don't think I've had any covers/colors bleed on me, but wash on warm rather than hot to prep.

Prepping seems overwhelming, but it's easy. You can't really screw up that badly.

  • I have never had a Simplex bleed on me. Not even the red one.
  • Thanks guys, I think I was most nervous about the Simplex because the outside fabric is completely different than any of the other diapers we have. I shall now go forth and do all the laundry!
