Information on IUI needed. (Child mentioned)

DH and I have been TTC for about 8 months. Because I have DD from previous relationship, my doctor mentioned it would be a good idea to have him tested. Since AF was making me more depressed as months went by, DH agreed to get tested. The least he could do after having CD3 and CD24 testing along with ultrasounds for myself right? Lol.
News came back not so good. His specimen was "empty." After a discussion with the doctor, we realized IVF isn't an option because he doesn't produce sperm, but if we can find a donor, IUI could be a possibility. My doctor couldn't answer many questions and refered us to a specialist on post. My husband will go to the consultation next week if he can get out of work (he is a drill sgt).
Question is, does prices for IUI include a donor specimen? Is any of the costs included in our lovely Tricare Prime insurance?
I am really trying to make a decision and move forward with a "no, let's just be the best parents we can to the one we have or yes, let's move forward and give it a shot."
I am incredibly heart broken for my husband because if it wasn't for his excitement and strong desire I would have never began thinking of the possibility of having another. My daughter is almost 7.

Here is the official word on what Tricare will cover. Like everything, it's all about how it's coded but it's pretty much just testing and medications for timed intercourse. https://www.tricare.mil/CoveredServices/SeeWhatsCovered/InfertilityTreatment.aspx

You might want to post on Trouble Trying to Conceive--there is most likely more traffic over there and you might get better information and support on moving forward. Good luck with your decision.

  • Iui is not usually covered unless his lack of sperm is from a military related injury then you have to fight for coverage. Also many mtfs do iui for free or low cost but most don't do donors. That would be an extra expense. Best thing is to call your re on base and see what they offer
