Re: GTKY: How did SO propose?
"Do you wanna marry me?"
"Really?!"
"Yes..."
"Really? Yes!"
We got married 6 weeks later!
The hill he proposed on was on "R hill" ...which I know call "Our hill."
He proceeded to ask me repeatedly every few days to weeks. "How about now? Do you want to marry me now?" or "I know what we could do this weekend! Get married!" He never did anything fancy, just popped it into conversations at irregular intervals.
One day he asked me and, quoting Laura Ingalls Wilder when Alonzo asks her to marry him, I said "that depends on the ring." Next day at breakfast he got down on one knee and whipped out this amazing creation --- he had hacksawed off a ring-sized bit of copper pipe and epoxied on a HUGE beryl from his rock collection (he was pursuing hi Master's in geology at the time). I laughed and said very nice try but still no, not yet.
He continued to ask me at irregular intervals until, quite some time later (maybe a month or so?) I said "Yes, all right." Then he sort of started and stared at me and said "What?" and I said "Yes, I will!" And he said, "really?"
Then we went and picked out a ring together over a long weekend and when we found it we went out for a very nice dinner and got rather toasted together. It was great. ;-)

The day we legally got married we picked out an engagement ring. In April 2012 he had purchased a wedding band for our wedding in July (he was in Oregon at this point). One night while watching TV he had gotten up to get something and when he came back he didn't sit back down on the couch. I looked over and he was on one knee and I was thinking "what the hell is he doing?" He said "I know we are already married, but you never got a proposal. I am so happy to have you as my wife and the mother of my children. Will you marry me?" And he had the box with my wedding band. Clearly the answer was yes, saying no would have just been awkward
We had a long engagement and will have our 12th anniversary this summer!
Flash forward to 2010, DH had surprised me with a trip to San Juan for my birthday (spoiled I know!). We didn't get in to the city until late at night, so he suggested we wake up early and watch the sunrise from the pier by our hotel.
We woke up bright and early to walk down to the pier. It was still about 10 minutes before sunrise and the pier was covered in dew. He laid down a blanket and had me sit. He pointed off to the distance to where it seemed like the sun would be coming from. When I turned back around, he was on one knee! It was perfect
We got home later that night and I went to bed and he came in and cuddled up to me and then started his little speech. I didn't actually think he was gonna propose, but then he pulled out the ring.
I was shocked! My friend told me later that he had actually planned on doing it the next morning but that he couldn't wait and did it right then instead.
Mine was on new years day 2008.
I was 18, he was 20. We had only been dating for five months. But known each other for 13 years!
Right at midnight he proposed.
We were young! I am glad we waited two years to get married.
Here we are almost four years later!
He came home from work on his lunch break and I was sitting on the couch. He got down on his knees in front of me and said "hey so do you want to get married?" I was like "duh we already discussed this." He pulled a box out of his pocket so I started freaking saying that we agreed no ring and he opened the box and said I know I didn't get you one. There was just a note that said IOU on it. My face kind of dropped because I thought it was a ring. Then he started laughing vand pulled the ring out of his pocket. My husband the trickster. We got married a month later on May 26th, 2013.
I started shaking said really?!?
And then yes! We both cried and then called our families.
We waited to tell my Grammy in person and she was thrilled. She had a conversation with DH that day that I have still yet to know what it was about and that's ok... She was so happy for us and it means the world to me that she knew I would be taken care of. (She passed away a few days later)
It means so much to know that my DH wanted her to know! ( he wasn't going to propose until our upcoming vacation but did a few weeks early so she could be included in our happy news)
( even writing this has me bawling)
Side note: One if our first dates was to dinner & then a walk on this same bridge.
Anyway, we hit the middle of the bridge & he stops & pulls me to turn towards him. I notice he's shaking & the words are tumbling out of his mouth in a nervous manner. He says to me, "I never thought I could love someone as much as I love you. You're my best friend & I want to spend the rest of my life with you." I of course said yes & then we hugged & I started cracking up. He asked me why I was laughing & I said, "You totally have a boner!" He got all embarrassed but realized it was a pretty random time to get a boner & he laughed too. Then he pulled the ring out of his pocket & handed it to me, HA! He told me that he wanted to ask me on our walk but then when I said my hands were swollen he panicked thinking the ring wasn't going to fit. The drive & ice water were to help reduce the swelling of my hands so when he did ask the ring would go on, lol! He handed me the ring to put on myself in case my fingers were still to fat. It wasn't the most romantic proposal but it was the perfect proposal for us.
That was waaaaaaay back in 2007! We got married July 31, 2009.

Would you all hate me if I started with how we met? I shoulda combined the two!
Short story: One of my best friends and one of his best friends are brother & sister. They technically put us together.
Long story: My best friend, after hearing my criteria for a man, told me I should meet her brother's best friend, Timmy. Since he lived in Denver, and I in Seattle, I brushed it off. I wouldn't be interested in long distance, nor moving. A couple weeks later, I was shopping for her bridal shower with her mom. We got on the topic of dating and she suggested I meet her son's best friend since the 4th grade, Timmy. I said not interested. Then another few weeks later at her wedding, I was sitting next to her brother's fiancé and she said I should meet Timmy, after discussing my man criteria. After the third person, I started wondering who this guy was. She called my best friend's brother over, explained my criteria and asked him who I should meet. Through his drunken stupor, he said, "Timmy!!!!"
I gave him my email address to give to Timmy. A couple days later, I got a Starbucks cup with this quote:
"I used to feel so alone in the city. All those gazillions of people and then me, on the outside. Because how do you meet a new person? I was very stunned by this for many years. And then I realized, you just say, "Hi." They may ignore you. Or you may marry them. And that possibility is worth that one word." -Augusten Burroughs
So I got Timmy's email address myself and emailed him "Hi!" on July 31, 2006. I remember thinking when I clicked send, "This is it!" We emailed back and forth for two weeks, then added phone calls. On October 13, since his best friend and then wife offered their free miles to Timmy to join them on a trip to Seattle, he came to meet me. What a great visit! From landing to take-off, it was 31 hours exactly. Did I mention our number is 31? If you add up all the letters in our first, middle, and last names, it equals 31. Same for the towns and states we lived in when we
met. See the date I emailed him?
In December I flew to Colorado to visit him and meet his family. In February of 2007, he flew to Seattle again to meet my family. In April, I flew to Colorado to go to a teaching fair since we had decided by then that I would move to Colorado that summer. (Just so happens my teaching certificate expired in WA that summer!) During this trip, we went ring shopping.
He surprised me at the beginning of May with a visit to Seattle for my birthday. Then at the end of May, I flew to CO to visit, but also run my first 10K. In July, he bought a one way ticket to Seattle to help me pack up my place into a U-Haul and go to the Oregon coast with my family before moving to CO.
Did I mention that in May, I booked our wedding venue? Yeah...wasn't even engaged yet. But wanted to get married on Saturday, May 31, 2008 since 31 is our number.
Anyway, on our last night in Oregon, July 31, a year to my first email, we packed up a dinner picnic and went to watch the sunset on the beach. He talked to me about how much I've changed his life in the past year and wanted to give me something to celebrate knowing each other for a year. He handed me a silver cup that had our quote, I mentioned above, engraved on with our names. Inside the cup was sand, rocks, and a shell. Inside the shell was a ring. He got on one knee, said more romantical things, and asked me to marry him!!!
It was beautiful. Just beautiful. So, on May 31, 2008, at 11:31 am, we got married!

We were on vacation with one of my brothers, his family and my parents.(this brother and I live in the same area,so we alway vacation together with my parents when they visit) I knew it was coming as we went to look at rings months prior and to be honest I always was on edge when my parents where around because I knew it was a possibility.
One evening my brother and SIL called for my to join him on the balcony too check out something and to make our plans for the night. No biggie. Meanwhile DH was inside with my parents, again no biggie. DH come out after a few and ask me if I'd go for a walk with him. At this point in our lives we were smokers so this was usually our code for smoke break. No problem, lets go! We make it down to the beach and get maybe two blocks away... DH says, I'm just going to do this... Drops to one knee in the sand and asked me to marry him. Duh, yes of course! As we walk back to the hotel, my family is out on the balcony cheering and celebrating. They all knew and while I was with my brother, DH was inside asking permission from my parents and getting himself ready. Very sweet!
awesome thread!!
He was trying to wait til we were watching fireworks but he said he was too excited too wait another 8 hours haha

He gave me the ring that my dad had given my mom!!
We were going to the Jason Aldean concert at the state fair that night with my best friend (Jason Aldean was my favorite artist at the time). We both had the day off work, so we decided to go just "looking" at rings that afternoon. We found one that we both really liked, so we bought it. He let me wear it out of the mall. About halfway to the fair, he asked for me to give the ring back because he wanted to do the proposal right. I was sad because I was so excited to show my friend, but I gave it back.
As soon as we get to the fair and meet my friend, DH takes off all on his own. My friend and I are like "well ok then...let's go find some cheese curds without him then!" lol. Just as we are about to buy our cheese curds, DH asks me to hurry over and meet him at the local newspaper booth. I thought it was weird, but we went over there. He then said 'follow me!" and we all hustled over to the local country radio station booth, where he waved the DJ over. The DJ said "so, you're a Jason Aldean fan huh? Do you want to meet him?" And I of course was like HELL YES! So he asked if I would dance on the counter of the booth to get the meet and greets...I figured that was a small price to pay...but I wanted my friend to do it with me because she wanted to meet him too. The DJ said that since my boyfriend asked that he was the one who had to dance with me. I was a little disappointed but said ok and he told us which song we were supposed to get up on the counter for (an upbeat song good for dancing).
Well, Jason Aldean's new song at the time was Big Green Tractor and when that came on, DH pushed me up on the counter. I was super disappointed because I was like "there is no way I am going to win these meet and greets dancing to a slow song!" and after a minute or so, the DJ cut the music and DH proposed to me in front of a big crowd! Then before the show (which we had 5th row tickets to!), the DJ personally introduced DH and I to Jason--he got to see my ring before my own mom!
In Venice on a gondola ride.
He was taking pictures all day and continued to do so while we were on the gondola. I kept nagging him to stop worrying about getting the pictures and just enjoy the moment.
He was fiddling with what I thought was the camera in his jacket pocket and I was starting to get frustrated and yell at him. Then he pulled out the ring box and got down on one knee in the gondola. It was rocking back and forth quite a bit from him getting down on one knee.
I don't remember at all what he said!
Best damn boat ride of my life!
We had always said that marriage wasn't important to us, and didn't change our commitment. But, nearly 5 years in we changed our minds one day.
We had a loft apartment (we lived together basically from day 1), and I was upstairs in the office and he was downstairs in the living room. We were talking about life and death and family, and one thing led to another and we somehow agreed we were ready to get married. No ring, no fireworks, no champagne, but it was just right for us. Three months later we threw a huge new year's eve party, and were married at sunset. We still don't wear rings.
