Cloth Diapering

CDing is too expensive!

I know, you're all laughing at me :-)

But really, I can't seem to find good sales or used prefolds anywhere. I was on GMD the other day putting in my last order before LOs arrival in 3 weeks. I was gonna order small prefolds but decided to give flats a try since they're cheaper and not sized. Hopefully I like them. If I could afford a whole stash of fitteds I would probably do that but alas I only bought 5 of NB and small for late night, day trips or daddy changes. Ok... End of complaint :-)

Re: CDing is too expensive!

  • It still isn't as expensive as disposables.

    True story!

  • Flats are awesome. If that's what fits your budget, you really can't go wrong with the GMD flats.

Glad to hear! I actually searched the board on flats vs. prefolds before I put my order in. They seemed to review well!
  • Yes flats are awesome. Even if you end up hating them folded and pinned/snappied on, they are great to pad fold and lay in a cover or to stuff pockets with.

  • I am not using my flats right now because M is close to outgrowing most of his prefolds. I'm determined to get my money's worth out of them! Unless I find a good sale, I shop local and buy a little at a time, mostly used. I splurged today because I found three discontinued diapers that I love. I bought all of them.

  • I love flats!  They can fit every size b/c you can just fold them differently to adjust.  I have put the same size flat on my NB and my toddler.  They are easy to wash and dry.  They are a trim fit.  They don't take up much room to store or pack.  I only have 6 fitteds for my littlest one for nights.  Just b/c it's an affordable stash doesn't mean you won't love it!!
  • You can make flats from old sheets or fabrics. That's what I did - quite proud I my money savings!
  • It is expansive, depending on the person. But it can be very affordable and economical if you knit your cover and recycle sheet or any other adsorben fabric.

It is an expense up front but we are doing the most expensive form of cloth diapering (pockets and AIOs) and we are still saving money. I might get some fitteds or prefolds at some point, especially if we are going to have another LO, just to make the savings that much better.

  • And you can use cloth for multiple children, so the savings can really add up!

  • The reason you don't see more use prefolds for sale is that they aren't worth the shipping costs to sell used typically. Since they are relatively "cheap" to begin with its normally break even or cheaper to just buy new. (At least for online). Local places you can get a good deal without shipping but its a smaller pool.

Also, you don't have I have everything at once. So it can seem less expensive if you spread out the purchases. And you'll definitely still save over disposables! (Don't forget cloth wipes! If you're tying to save $$)

Yup! Got the wipes! Will probably need more but we have a start. As for cost I forget I'm looking at 2 years of use. When I remember then I'm like "oh yea. $400 isn't bad AT ALL!" That's all I've spent on what I've bought so far and that would last at least the first year if I made it. Of course I do go through a buy all the diaper covers phase now and again :-)
  • The up-front cost can be tough on some budgets, but you can just start with a partial stash and build up your stash as funds allow. You'll find pretty quickly that even if you CD 50% of the time it will save you money.

Try this: during that first week or two, you will probably be tracking your wet/dirty diapers. The hospital or your pedi might even give you a chart to fill out. Look at the number of diapers you go through each week. Then, take a look at how many packs of diapers and how much money you would have spent if you were doing 100% sposies. Your NB stash will pay for itself pretty quickly. Any other money you would have spent on sposies -- put it in a jar towards saving for your OS stash.
