Swift kick in the...

Ugh, I shouldn't have been so stupid about thinking that I would get further using an OB. It is true ladies, skip the crap with them if you can and go to the RE.

I went originally to my OB for testing because I thought that my insurance would cover some of the testing. I knew going in that they did not cover infertility treatment. I called ahead of time and was told that anything with a diagnosis of infertility would not be covered. I thought ok, well, blood work and a visit to the doctor is not treatment so that I would be ok. WRONG!

Not only did the stupid doctor not tell me when to go in for the blood work (just happened to hit the day with pure dumb luck) but the HSG either. The nurse told me that my HSG would have to be approved by my insurance and they would call me when it was. Well a week went by and never heard so I called, they said go ahead and schedule (me thinking "yay approved!") so I called and by dumb luck again got in within the window I was supposed to, zero guidance regarding timing from my office.

Turns out they found the blockage during the test and I called my doctors office when the nurse who did my test said they would have the results and the lady first gives a nasty attitude about me wanting to know if they have the results and then proceeded to tell me "Well, at least you're lucky you have one good tube, take what you can get right?" Uh... Then after discovering that everything was coded with infertility my inusrance would cover nothing (even though I had had the same type of appointment 6 months earlier with my other doctor!) and she then began talking to me like I was the dumbest person ever and said "I always tell my infertility patients that you're responsible and that you knew already so take responsibility for it" OMG, I wanted to kill her over the phone. I then told  (on the verge of tears at this point) her "well then cancel my appointment (HSG follow up)" and she goes "(pause) Why would you want to cancel your appointment with your doctor?" and I said "if I am going to have to pay for this then I am going to a specialist, just cancel the appointment". The dumb lady still didn't cancel my appointment and thankfully I went online to check and canceled it myself. She made me feel like a criminal! I knew that anything that was coded infertility we would have to cover but after being told it was just basic bloodwork and an office visit I didn't expect to be billed for it all!

I am floored at the idea that a doctors office who deals with this sort of stuff on what I imagine to be a regular basis could be so stupid and unprofessional. A nasty letter is being written regarding the woman on the phone and I'll be switching OB's. Anyone who keeps someone like that in their office to deal with patients and sensitive situations does not deserve my business.

Needless to say I am running, not walking, to my RE appointment in a few weeks...

Trying to have baby #1 since April 2013

DH SA March,May 2014 - Low motility and shape issues. On vitamins per RE to help

Me testing April 3, 2014 - FSH and LH good, HSG showed blocked right tube

April 29, 2014 - First RE appt., right tube needs to be removed and possibly left also if

it's bad too. RE suggests going straight to IVF

June 4, 2014 - LAP/HSC and unexpected endo. removed but tubes got to stay!

June 13, 2014 - Post-Op appointment. We decide where to go next since main issue

is MFI influenced. Trying naturally until decision... Repeat SA  in September. Aiming for IUI #1 November 2014.

Re: Swift kick in the...

  • Wow, what a horrible phone call. That sucks! Regardless of whether or not you knew that you would have to pay, she should not be that rude and unprofessional. Especially to tell you that you are lucky to have 1 good tube. Wtf? Who says that? Does she walk up to someone with a missing limb and tell them they're lucky?
I hope you have better luck with your RE!

  • WTF?? I would have went ape on the phone with the rude chick. Ugh! I have no patience for rude insensitive people. I'm hoping your move to an RE brings you better success, even if it's OOP.

  • So sorry, what a slap in the face to get her rude comment and treatment after being shocked by having to pay OOP! Maybe I'm paranoid but I wonder if they purposefully misled you about insurance coverage knowing that they'd get the business this way.

I'm glad you've found and RE and gotten some testing done (high fives for the lucky timing!) so you can move forward. Good luck!

  • That is terrible!  I am so sorry for her insensitivity and that you had to go through all of that.  I am glad that you are writing a letter and standing up for yourself.  Ugh, that suck that you have to pay for everything related to infertility.  Infertility is a disease just like everything else, and it should be covered!
