BLW our Preemies

Just wondering if any of our preemie babies have started with BLW yet? Owen is 7 months (5.5 adjusted), but he's not sitting up on his own at all so we haven't really introduced him to too much food yet. I am avoiding spoon feeding at all costs, but he seems really interested in food these days. I have put him in his high chair and put some baby purees as well as sweet potato and mashed squash on his tray and let him have at it and feed himself, but I'm worried that by only giving him mashed/pureed food at the moment it may confuse him when he's sitting up and actually ready to practice BLW. Also, he's so small he can barely reach what we put on his tray any way. I've also given him frozen pineapple and mango in one of the mesh teethers but, again, I'm worried that this might confuse him so I don't do it often. What are y'all doing? Any advice or insight on what I should do until he's sitting up unassisted?

PS. His pedi isn't in any hurry to start him on solids either, so there's also that

Re: BLW our Preemies

  • Mine is 6 months 4.5 adjusted and we do both purees and a little BLW. She sits up well in the highchair and seems to be able to switch eating styles fine. I mostly just preload a spoon with a puree and she feeds herself with it though

  • personally i would just wait a little longer. he should start sitting up soon.

dd1 didn't even really start eating much until about a month after we started blw with her. it's not about nutrition at this point. jmo.

Yay! I was hoping you'd respond! Your opinion deft matters, and I 100% agree with you. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong.

  • Brayden was only 3.5 weeks early so borderline preemie but we fed him purées first & he did just fine when I started giving him real food. We do a mix of both. Every baby's different though so just go with your gut. He was sitting on his own when we started real food however.
  • Daniel is 5.5 months adjusted, but I kind of just go with the flow. He was interested in food really early, and our pediatrician gave us the go at his 4 month appointment to start cereals, but I waited until he was closer to 6 months (actual). We do purees and BLW. He doesn't sit up unassisted all the way, but loves to sit in his highchair and play, and I figure it's all for fun anyways. We mostly do things as we're eating them (he's tried an apple, pear, steamed broccoli, cantaloupe and bananas). I don't really do things 100% by the book though, so probably defer to @crunchymama11 on the right way to do things :) She is our resident expert!

  • I make LOs purées..usually what we have for dinner. Sometimes I'll just mush it up and feed her it or sometime it is an actual purée. However, I've given her asparagus (whole) and a sweet potato chunk and she had no problem eating it.

  • LO is 8.5 mos actual/6 mos adjusted and we just started a mix of BLW and purées over the course of the last few weeks. She's just now sitting up completely unassisted, but we've been slowly introducing stuff to her. She hasn't even too interested until this week it seems. We've used the mesh teether, purées and some fruit/veg chunks.

It's hard to remember there's an adjusted age in there, as I tend to think in terms of actual age. I don't think switching between purées and BLW has messed with her really, either.

Jace was born a month early, so is 5 months adjusted. We started some of the BLW stuff last month, really casual like and more for him to soothe his gums. He enjoyed gnawing on broccoli and tolerated carrots. He now happily gnaws on a lot of veggies, though still dislikes carrots and never got into bananas. We are still super casual with it, but he now wants to steal from us :)
