BLW Check In

I don't think we have one of these!! Did a search and couldn't find one. With most of our LO's approaching 6 months, how are things going BLW mamas?

When did you start BLW?

What was LO's first food?

Any choking/gagging?

What will you try next?

Any reservations or success stories to share so far?

Re: BLW Check In

  • When did you start BLW?
LO will be 6 months on the 17th, but we started last week when I thought he was going through a growth spurt.

    What was LO's first food?
We gave him a strip of chicken from the top of a thigh. We had chicken tikka masala and I thought he would like the slight flavor the spices gave the meat. He LOVED it. Sucked it to death but then I got nervous because a small strip came off and he was moving it all around in his mouth. I know that it is normal, but I was just so flipping nervous he would choke. When I saw part of the meat coming out of his mouth, I grabbed it. We have also tried avocado, sweet potato, carrot and oats.

    Any choking/gagging?
Some gagging on a big piece of banana.

    What will you try next?
I think we will try some steamed broccoli.

Any reservations or success stories to share so far?
Just super worried about the choking. So much so I think we are going to hold off a bit on some of the larger foods for a couple of weeks. MIL is a nurse trained in teaching infant CPR, First Aid and Choking, so she gave us a run down of what to do if anything bad would happen. Still anxious though!

What was LO's first food? A strawberry. She loved it, but mostly just mushed it around.

Any choking/gagging? Not yet. She tried a tomato slice the other day and actually broke a piece off! We were in a restaurant and I just knew she was going to start gagging and make me look like an idiot, but she just moved Iit around and then spat it out.

What will you try next? We were going to try sweet potatoes today, but I chickened out because it was mushy enough. I was too hungry to wait lol

Any reservations or success stories to share so far? Same as pp, worried about choking!

  • We have not officially started but gave him a banana piece and a tomato piece. He did gag on the banana which was very upsetting for me that it has sort of taken out my enthusiasm. We went to the pedi today for his 6 month check up and I brought the BLW book, she was not in board and echoed her concerns for choking which of course made my bf now wary. I still really want to try it so any recommendations I will read :)

  • I don't think we have one of these!! Did a search and couldn't find one. With most of our LO's approaching 6 months, how are things going BLW mamas?

When did you start BLW? 5.5 months

What was LO's first food? DH gave her a puree first, but her first BLW food was sweet potato.

Any choking/gagging? Yep, sometimes. We had an incident tonight with zucchini and we had to pat her on the back. She threw it up on the floor. That's the worst I've seen with both kids. Lots of gagging, though. We just let her work it out and talk in soothing voices instead of getting riled up. She's a champ.

What will you try next? She's having cauliflower tomorrow. We've done a ton of veggies and a few meats (shredded/pulled). I may try yogurt soon.

Any reservations or success stories to share so far? Our DCP thought I was crazy for BLW. Today, she fed her a piece of a waffle and a half of a banana. She couldn't believe how she ate it. Frankie really chews her food, it's so funny to see. She looks like an old lady without her teeth in. DCP loved it and is excited to give her more foods.

When did you start BLW? At 5 months

What was LO's first food? banana

Any choking/gagging? She only gagged once

What will you try next? We did pickles yesterday. She loved it, but she got off a pretty big chunk. I didn't wait to see if she would work it out or not. I took it out. I will probably try asparagus or green beans.

  • When did you start BLW?
We started giving him tastes around 4.5/5 months.

    What was LO's first food?
    Sweet potato. Still his favorite.

    Any choking/gagging?
He gagged a little bit at first but hardly ever now. He is really good at chewing.

    What will you try next?
    We try lots of everything.

Any reservations or success stories to share so far?
We are totally winging the food thing. He hasn't rejected anything except avocado. I'm amazed at how good he is at grabbing and chewing.

  • When did you start BLW? Around 4.5-5 months, but we started very sparingly.

What was LO's first food? Rice crackers (mum mums)

Any choking/gagging? She's gagged maybe 3 or 4 times and has had a ton of different foods so she's doing pretty good.

What will you try next? I really want to get peanut butter out of the way, so I can give her peanut suave and stuff, but I'll probably wait a few more months. I did put it on her skin and nothing happened so that's good. She's had most of our common foods so I don't even know what's going to be next.

Any reservations or success stories to share so far? I gave her some apple slices she did an awesome job taking bites from. I didn't think she'd be able to eat it, just chew on it.

    When did you start BLW?
A week before he turned 6 mnths

    What was LO's first food?
    Banana, avocado, bread, string cheese

    Any choking/gagging?
A little here n there. But he moves the food around pretty well.

    What will you try next?
We have tried so much already...yellow peppers, mango, chicken, noodles n pasta, spaghetti, zucchini, squash, cucumber, asparugus,steak...

Any reservations or success stories to share so far? Im starting to relax more and realize he can move the food back out of his mouth very well. He gets so excited in his chair at night.
he also loves to try and drink water out ofa glass! Very carefully of course. :)

  • When did you start BLW?
    About 5.5 months

    What was LO's first food?
    Baked sweet potato

    Any choking/gagging?
    Yes, lots

    What will you try next?
I think I am going to try apple slices tomorrow, so far he has had sweet potato, carrot, cucumber, banana, broccoli, avocado and pear.

Any reservations or success stories to share so far?
I definitely freak out when he gags even though I am cognizant of the fact that he is not choking and needs to go through this in order to learn. Still I can't handle it. I have actually used the mesh bag teethers for soft things like banana or avocado. The kid even chokes on purees sometimes if they are too thick/grainy so we are definitely taking it slow.

When did you start BLW?   5 months (so last month).  He is 6 months now.

What was LO's first food? Avocado

Any choking/gagging?  No choking, but he does gag.  Never phases him.

What will you try next?  So far we have done:  broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, apples, bananas, toast strips, green beans, yams, and sweet potatoes.  He likes all but carrots and bananas.  He will tolerate them, but isn't crazy for it.  Pears and asparagus will be this week.

Any reservations or success stories to share so far?  He adores his sweet potatoes and yams.  And he will now tolerate his cereal better since he can dunk his toast strips in it.  No reservations, total fun!

  • I've been so waiting for a reason to post a covered in food AW!

We started at 5.5 and we are a month in. Her favorite is hummus on toast stick, but she has been agreeable to everything we have tried. Sweet potato, carrots, pear, banana, squash, apple, cucumber and avocado.

There has been a little gagging and one epic puke, but so far really fun!
  • We've been doing it since he was 5 1/2 months.  We don't give him food all the time but I'm working on trying to get him more food time.  He has been playing with the food a lot lately, though.  He will rub it on his head and face!!  He likes veggies and loves garlic toast.

FWIW, babies can gag on purées, too.  It was tense the first time he gagged but his eating skill improved very quickly and he now makes chewing motions when he gets something in his mouth.  I think you should be comfortable / confident with BLW and trust your baby.  I would have to tell myself to trust him and he has done exactly what the book says.  It's really quite amazing.

  • We're doing both purees & a little BLW. He loves eating!

When did you start BLW? Around 6 months not including the pickle my mom let him suck on at 4.5 mths.

What was LO's first food? Steamed brocolli with cheese I think.

Any choking/gagging? Just gagged once or twice.

What will you try next? I want to try apples.

Any reservations or success stories to share so far? He's really good at gumming peices off & it sometimes makes me nervous but he loves it & does really well!
  • We're doing both purees & a little BLW. DS just loves food in general.

When did you start BLW? Around 6 1/2 months. We started purees at 6 months, but he showed interest so I thought, heck, why not?

What was LO's first food? He chewed on a bit of my apple and loved it, so we started doing more. Pears (ripe), banana, mum mum crackers, steamed broccoli, and he tried a sweet potato fry at Applebees but was not impressed lol.

Any choking/gagging? Some gagging - he didn't like the texture of stuff on his tongue at first, and would gag all the time, but now it's nbd.

What will you try next? Honestly, we just keep winging it - stuff we're eating that he shows interest in.
Any reservations or success stories to share so far? I think we're not technically doing BLW because he refuses to pick up the food himself and feed himself, but screams until we feed the chunk of food to him. It's comical, because he'll open his mouth and flap his arms and scream until we give him the food - he's our little bird lol. He did pick up the mum mum cracker though, once I placed it in his hand.

  • Jo started early, at around 4 months. She decided she wanted to suck on the pear I was eating. Since then we have tried a lot of foods. The only thing she has had trouble with is when MIL gave her some purees haha. She loves working food around in her mouth and trying out the different textures. Sometimes she makes me a bit nervous, but she's actually getting good with a sippy cup (took the white piece out). I can not eat anything in front of her because she tries to steal it or whines because she wants some.

  • When did you start BLW?  DD was a week shy of 6 months (she's 7 months tomorrow).

What was LO's first food?  A green pepper slice, she just kind of sucked on it.  We were going to be waiting to start with her but she was so interested in our food we gave her a piece of green pepper.

Any choking/gagging?  Slight gagging on occasion but she got the hang of things pretty quickly and has rarely gagged after the first two weeks.

What will you try next?  We tried peanut butter last night and she loved it!

Any reservations or success stories to share so far?  It's been a bit nerve wracking letting other people feed her (grandparents/daycare), but they all seem to do well with it.
  • We tried cereal and some pureed sweet potato around 5 months' ish I think, mostly at that time because I felt pressure to start her on some solids. She wasn't that interested in food and I wanted to try BLW, so I didn't push the issue.

Within the last few weeks she has showed WAY more interest in food. Like, she suddenly tried to grab it when we went to dinner, so I figured we better get on this whole feeding thing. Haha

So far, she has had avocado, carrots, and broccoli. She only likes the first two. She is also getting some organic apple sauce with cereal in the morning at day care. I have sweet potatoes and a pear at home to try next. Oh, and we gave her a green bean at a restaurant, but it was too stiff for her to really eat, and she ended up sticking it too far into her mouth and then threw up all over me. That was fun. Not.

She is getting really good at feeding herself and gumming off pieces she can chew and eat. We've only had a couple gagging incidents that resulted in much of anything coming back up.

Hopefully she keeps making process because H isn't fully on board with the BLW. Not because he doesn't like the concept, but because the ped made him/us feel like she should be eating more food. I am constantly trying to point out how much she is really consuming, even if it doesn't look like it.

What are your thoughts/info on how much they should be eating. Ped said that, by 9 months, she should be eating a 4 oz jar of food in a sitting. That just seems like a lot, but it also contains a lot of water I would assume. I didn't even bring up the BLW because I didn't want to deal with it.

Please be careful with this. Putting aside any allergy concerns, peanut butter is a choking hazard because it is so sticky and it is generally not recommended to give it to a baby this early, BLW or not.
