Cloth Diapering

I just don't know - cloth on a 5 month old

I still haven't made the plunge to CD overnight on my 5 month old. My two year old I have no problem CD full time.

My 5 month old, I have been struggling with. Right now he is in ALVAs (mostly) with one bamboo insert. I am going to have to bump it up to two because he soaks through in less than an hour. I have no idea what to use over night. His legs are already so spread out and I feel like he is super uncomfortable in the Thirsties with a cover I purchased for over night.

Also, he hasn't rolled over yet. I know everyone says CD and rolling over have nothing to do with each other.

I don't know what I am asking. Just feeling frustrated today. I would really love to be completely disposables free.

BAH!

Re: I just don't know - cloth on a 5 month old

  • We use fitteds overnight (a regular Twinkie Tush) and they hold a lot. They're bulky and her legs are really froggied out, but she still manages to flip flop in her crib all night long.

Your LO will roll over eventually. You're right; try not to worry about the CDs. Every baby reaches milestones at different times. He won't be in preschool and unable to roll over. ;)

I do notice that LO can move more freely when she's diaper-free though, so we have lots of nude-y floor time. I would do this even if she were in disposables though.

  • We use fitteds, too. The discomfort is only on your part, I promise.

  • LO is 6 mo old and sleeps in a fitted with a cover (we were doing a pocket double stuffed with bamboo and that was working too), which is pretty bulky. She rolls all over her crib without trouble.

  • I agree with everyone. Yes CDs are bulky, but they likely aren't impeding development more than a few days to a week. Promise.

We use prefolds with a doubler and sometimes fitteds ON and love them. Never had a week since we switched from double stuffed pockets at around 4 months.

  • The bulk of a cloth diaper does not bother the baby. And it doesn't make any difference regarding developmental milestones. 30 years ago disposable diapers were as bulky as many pocket diapers today. Sposies being paper-thin is a relatively new thing.

DD has been in CDs since birth (she's 26 months now). She required 2 inserts in a daytime pocket from about 4 months old and I used the crazy huge Twinkie Tush Night Night fitteds on her from about 8-15 months old (and less bulky fitteds from 4-8 months). It's not uncommon to need more than one insert during the day or to need a super absorbent fitted for overnight.

  • This picture refers to baby carriers, but it gets the idea across. Their hips are supposed to be spread out. cloth diapers if anything help that.image

  • And once they start rolling, they won't stop. Jo has decided she doesn't want to roll towards toys, but during a diaper change, sure thing! We do prefolds with a hemp doubler for night currently. Looking into trying some fitteds as well.

  • They really don't mind the bulky diaper. DS2 can roll tummy to back now at 3 months and is nearly able to roll back to tummy. This is all in fairly bulky CDs because he is a super soaker.
They will roll when they are ready. The diaper doesn't matter.

  • I really liked best bottoms for overnight.  We did a doubler plus a cotton/hemp insert.  It's not insanely bulky (trimmer than a fitted) but held a ton of pee.

  • You guys are so awesome!

Okay so, what about when I am breastfeeding and that leg is just dangling out there! I feel so bad for him LOL!

I will cloth him over night in his fitted and cover and add another insert to his daily diapers and see what happens.

I can't afford a 4 pack of TTNN so that is out!

  • If I didn't have my fitteds I would put DS in a snappi'd prefold with a hemp doubler between the prefold and the cover. I've done that when we were traveling and didn't bring enough fitteds. It was pretty saturated in the morning but it didn't leak.

You don't need an expensive fitted to CD ON.

  • When you gals nurse and LO has a ton of padding, doesn't their leg just dangle? LOL! Looks uncomfortable to me. Anyway, it's not so bad now that he is older. Was really bad as a newborn using FST and a cover.
  • I mostly did more a reclined/laid back position, so we didn't have a dangling leg like in your picture. I also liked lying on my side in bed, but I tended to get clogs that way.
  • We mostly lay on our side in bed these days
  • I did more reclined/laid back, too. Even when I didn't she seemed to find something to do withher leg (stick her foot in my mouth, hold it with her hand, loop her leg over my arm, etc etc)
