3rd Trimester

For those who have been induced....

Can you share a little about your experience, good and/or bad? Any complications? Did you deliver vaginally or have a cesarean? How long were you in labor? How did you feel after you got the pitocin?

Whenever I mention I am being induced, I get all of the unwanted "advice" and information that does nothing but make me feel like a bad mom for doing it. I know I always have the choice to say no, but I am not the expert like my doctor is. I am being induced this Friday due to high blood pressure and increased kidney levels.

Thanks ladies. Any info is helpful info.

Re: For those who have been induced....

  • I was induced with my first due to high bp. Listen to your doctor. They know what's best. For me it started slow like menstral cramps and worked it's way up the pain level. I was in labor for about 24 hours but everyone is different. The meds start working pretty quick also. My doctor had me on Magnesium for the high bp and that kept me a little doped up which I didn't care for but knew it was for the best. My daughter was born at 35 weeks. 3lbs 14oz. She was very small but healthy. It's worth it!! Good luck to you!!!

  • I was induced for pre eclampsia a week early. The whole process took about 24 hours. I wasn't dilated past a fingertip so I need a little balloon put into my cervix to help dilate me to 3cm and then I started to receive the pitocin. After about 17 hours of painful contractions, I was only 4-5 cm and my doctor suggested that an epidural would actually help speed the process up because my body was responding poorly to the pain and at this point I was feeling nervous and upset because I wasn't planning on an epidural but I didn't want to put the baby in distress and her heart rate was fluctuating a lot... so I did it and about 4 hours later... we had a baby. Everything went fine!! This time I'm actually 2 days past my due date with no signs of pre eclampsia and I will wait to go naturally as long as there are no medical problems. So the good news is... All pregnancies are different and you and the doctor can choose what's best for this baby and forget everyone else! ;-)
  • I was induced but only by having my water broken and only because i was 2 weeks late.  I was already 60% effaced and 3 cm dialated.  It was broken at 8 am and contractions really started at 12.  He was here by 4:15 with only 15 mins of pushing.  I was lucky not needing pitocin and hope you have a great birth as well! good luck!

  • I was induced with my 1st at 41 weeks.  My amniotic fluid was beginning to diminish, so the doc decided to induce.  Everything was fine.  I went to the hospital friday morning, I was not efaced or dilated at all, they began the pitocin around 11am, everything was progressing fine.  At around 4:30 or 5:00pm I requested an epidural.  The epi was administered.  DS actually had a reaction to the epidural and they couldn't find his heartbeat so they ended up doing an emergency c-section about 15 minutes after I got the epi.  The epi had not kicked in yet so I was put completely under.  He was 100% healthy when he was born with no issues whatsoever and I was fine and had a fairly easy recovery.

I was induced at 41w4 days. Admitted at 6:00p and They gave me cytotech vaginally to soften my cervix. That gave me contractions 1min apart for 12 hours. They came in and slowed them a few time

630a I was at a 1, they broke my water and gave me an epidural. By 645a I was at a 4. Baby stressed and my heart rate dropped... Rushed in for an emergency c. Baby had cord wrapped 2x around neck and torso. Arrived at 7:02a

Even with all the labor it wasn't that bad.
  • I was induced 10 days early with Pit. Total labor was just shy of 4 hours. I pushed 14 times. No complications at all. I think there are a whole lot of people who are scared of Pit for no good reason. Btw, I had my baby naturally. No epidural. Pit didn't cause the "cycle" that people claim is inevitable where Pit leads to worse contractions, slows down transition, and ends with a c-section. I'm being induced again this time because I'm GBS positive and my labor last time was so short. They need to get the antibiotics in me for long enough to protect the baby.
  • I had been having contractions since week 18. Decided to induce at 39 and 3(?) I think... Water broken at 6 am. Pitocin drip at that time. I was 2 cent and had been for two weeks ish. It took 6 hours to get from 2 to 3. Then about one hour to get all the way to 9. He flipped in that hour. Emergency c section. Very healthy baby boy. Honestly, I wouldn't change a thing about my birth. And I don't feel bad for being induced. Just understand that pitocin contractions and natural contractions are two different ball games. Good luck!!!! Relax and enjoy the whole thing. It will pass quickly and you never get it back. Take pictures. Selfies. Videos of you mid contraction. You'll be happy you did :) Also... Bring gummy bears lol. I wasn't allowed food, but had gummy bears and they let me eat them!
  • I was 5 days over due when I woke up, went to the bathroom and started bleeding, dripping blood. We went straight to the hospital, did an ultrasound and found the placenta was detaching (placenta abruption) so they broke my water and started the induction. I stopped bleeding by this point. Ds's heart rate was going up and down so after 4 hours I was rushed in for an emergency c-section. He was born healthy. No problems.
  • I was induced after my water broke but I had not started to contract.

Woke up at 1:30am and thought the slight drip might be more than just urine. At 4am I had a pretty good idea it was. I was registered and taken in at the hospital at 7:30am, in the delivery room by 9, Pitocin started at 9:30am and little guy born at 3:30pm.

The contractions started almost right away for me and they came on hard and fast. Like really hard and fast. I wish I'd known more and not been pushed into the induction, I've always wondered if I would have started contracting on my own anyways. But I guess we'll never know.

Sounds like you have some very legitimate medical reasons to go with the induction. Like others have said, trust your doctor.

    And good luck!!

  • I was induced with my son, Can't compare to a natural unmedicated birth because this is my second pregnancy and I've decided not to induce it this time so I'll tell you the difference within 3-4 weeks :) I'll be 37 weeks tomorrow.

In regards my first pregnancy, I decided to accept the pitocin because the hospital was very far from home and I was 1 cm dilated already when I got to the hospital that night. They gave me the pitocin around 9pm, my mucus plug came out around midnight and my water broke right after. Didint feel strong contractions or pain until around 9am. I asked for epidural around 11am (huge mistake) I feel the urge to push around 12pm but then the epidural caused that I couldnt feel the contractions so i didnt know when to push anymore, thats why they had to performe an episiotomy. Baby was born at 12:29pm.

This time I'm planning on not taking the epidural and letting the labor go naturally without being induced. Let's see how that goes.

wish me luck and good luck to you :)

  • I was induced at 41 weeks after zero progress for the previous 4. Overall, I felt it was a good experience! I delivered vaginally and I did have a complication but it wasn't a factor of being induced. The cord was wrapped around his neck but the reason I felt it was a good experience was because of the nurses. They were phenomenal and while I was worried about the baby, I was extremely confident in their handling of the situation. Baby and I were monitored so carefully. My labor was 13 hours, once I started pitocin, contractions started pretty quickly and got intense fast. I asked for my epidural and within 5 minutes, I was getting it. Labor started at 10:30 om and my doctor came in at 8 am to break my water. Things progressed very quickly after that and at 11, I was ready to push. Baby boy was born at 11:12 and he was healthy and beautiful!
Induction can be a scary thought but once you're there and started, the fear melts away and you become excited about meeting your baby soon.
And don't let anyone make you feel bad. Good luck :-)

  • I was induced with both DD and DS at 41 weeks. Both times I went in the night prior and had cervidil inserted overnight, and then started the pitocin in the am. I've never felt non-pitocin contractions so I can't compare them to; but I did have an epidural both times as well. They also broke my water and then I pretty much chilled/napped for a few hours (2-3) until I felt pressure in my butt and it was time to push! DD was 9lbs 13oz, out with a few pushes, DS a bit smaller at 8lbs 5oz was out with one push. Both times I was able to get up and walk after and had no issues what so ever. I am hoping for a healthy baby ( obviously) but would not hesitate do have an induction again, if my OB recommends it. My body seems to tolerate the induction process well and having a history of inductions, my OB feels that my chances of ending up with a section would be very low this time around.

  • I was induced with my second due to super fast first delivery,,, and living far from the hospital.

the whole experience was about 8 hours and I felt little but what I'd consider comparable to early natural signs of labor like PMS cramping. once things really got rolling I was at 3-4 cm & I hadn't felt much pain yet. once I did, I got the epidural & then my water broken. once I was past 5cm I was in more discomfort & went to 10 quickly. got another epidural bolis but had the baby in 20 minutes & was a bit numb after from not requesting the bolis earlier.
while it was longer than natural labor for me, I think overall it was very comparable.
I hear of many first inductions ending up in c section but I don't know why. mine was great so good luck!

Induced at 41w 2d. Given cervical ripener (cervadil) at 8pm. Given another cervical ripener (a pill, I forget what its called) at 8am the next morning. When nothing had changed the doctor said f-it and gave me pitocin at about 4pm, which started active labor. Broke my water at 6pm, and by 7pm the contractions were hurting. I got an epi around 10pm. Before the induction started I decided that I would get the epi when I didn't want to deal with the pain any longer. Because I was pretty much bedridden with the pitocin and couldn't move and practice pain management techniques I decided that medicinal pain management was going to be my best bet. I am so glad I got it, the active part of labor was such a breeze.

After they gave me the pitocin and epi, I got really sleepy and pretty much slept through the night. I also got really shaky alot, which is normal. Twice the nurses rushed in and had me move because LO's heartrate dropped. Those were scary moments, I was sure I was headed to a cs.

Started pushing at 7:45, LO was born at 8:30 vaginally. His heartrate dropped again right before he was born, and that was really really scary.

Recovery was fine. I had one small tear, had a few stitches but otherwise no complications.

Took 36 hours from start of induction and probably about 16 hours of active labor.

  • My water broke before I was in active labor, so eventually (15 or so hours after water break) I had to go on Pitocin to get things moving along. I went on pit at 6am, and didn't really get much progress with contractions until later that afternoon - around dinner time. However, I still wasn't dilating.. Luckily, my doc didn't push a c/s. I was able to go off the pit for a while -take a shower, go for a longer walk (over an hour around and around) and by the time we got back into the room and back on Pitocin, things finally started picking up. The break was all my body needed to get going, and I was dilating and in transition in a couple hours. I think 6PM was when I took the break, back on about 8PM, and finally got the epidural at 10PM when I couldn't take it anymore lol. I'm hoping things happen on their own this time, but I was grateful my doc wasn't pushing me for a c/s when there was no progress and let me take a pit break! all in all, 36 hours from water break to birth, 18-20 hours on Pitocin  (6am til birth at 2:30 AM with the break).

  • I was induced at 37 weeks due to cholistasis. I showed up at te hospital at 1pm, got one dose of cytotec (cervical pill to soften cervix) was having contractions every 2-3 min so they waiting and couldn't give me pitocin. Water broke at 4 naturally, baby was born a few hours later.

It's not unheard of for cytotec or cervadil to start labor without pitocin if your body is really ready and just needs a little push. I was in labor for a total of 7 hours and 40 minutes of pushing.

I hope if I have to be induced again to have a similar experience

    Married to DH 10.29.11

    DS born 6.12.14
    #3 due 12.6.16

  • I was a week overdue with my first child so i was induced on a friday. I was doing pretty good and dilating fine. I was in labor for about 30 hours before i was ready to push. I pushed for 3 hours before my son went into distress. I ended up having an emergency c-section. My son was born perfectly healthy with no problems weighing 9 lbs 5oz.

Induced with DD at 38 weeks due to low fluid levels.

Given cervix ripener at 6pm then again the next morning.  No pitocin given.

Active labor (contractions that HURT.) started around noon.

Received epidural around 4 (water broke while getting it).

DD born at 4:58pm, 5lbs 13oz., vaginally, after 20 minutes of pushing.  No significant tearing, no stitches, no complications.

23 hours from start of induction to baby being born, 5 hours of active labor.

    this is my dream labor

I was induced with #1. It was awful. I was 41 w 5 d and fine, but they wanted me to be induced. I didn't know any better so I went with it. I was at 0. 50+ hours later (4 of pushing), I had a c-section.
