Breech Baby at 36 weeks

Hi ladies,
I just got back from my 36 week appointment and feeling a bit deflated. I was told that baby is breech and chances of her turning on her own now are around 6% (she is also on the bigger side so less room to move). They have scheduled an ECV to try to turn her next week and check if she is still breech. I'm not sure how I feel about the ECV and whether it is worth the risk considering the success rate is only around 50% (OB said to go to appointment and we can decide after ultrasound etc). My only other option is prepare for c-section or hope some how she turns before the scheduled c section date. I am an FTM and was hoping for a natural birth, and feeling like that has just fallen apart now, even though at the end of the day all I want is a healthy baby. Has anyone had any experience with breech babies or an ECV that could give me some advice?

  • Thanks for your responses! I'm hoping she flips on her own before next week!!
  • I am 37 weeks and baby was still breech last Monday. I have tried every position on spinning babies and even have been laying upside down on an inversion table! However, I ordered moxibustion sticks off of amazon- they are what the acupuncturist would use, and have been using them. The baby definitely goes wild during their use! I am not sure if she is head down (I go this morning to find out) but they did get her moving in the right direction. You may want to try and order some!
  • I am 35 weeks with a breech. If she's still breech in a week, we'll be scheduling a c section. I am more comfortable with the plan than version --> induction if the version is successful.

  • FWIW, DS was 9 lbs 3 oz at birth (39w4d) and flipped from head down to breech at 39 weeks after being head down for weeks. So those 6% do exist. ;) Being so far along we opted for the c/s (which was very discouraging as a FTM) instead of flipping him.

  • Look into going to a prenatal chiropractor! I delivered a breech baby via c-section (my son ended up having the cord wrapped around his neck twice which is probably why he couldn't turn) and everything went perfectly but the chiropractor that I have seen this time around due to hip pain said she is 86% effective in turning breech babies. Worth looking into! Good luck!!

I've thought about this a lot as one of my fears is a breech positioned baby. I would do like PP suggested: spinningbabies, chiro, acupuncture and if that didn't work, I'd try the version! 50% is pretty good odds.

  • My baby is still breech at 37+3 I've tried everything including acupuncture, Chiro, moxibustion to no avail. OB tried an ECV last Friday which was unsuccessful unfortunately
  • @kathrynmce9376‌ was the ECV painful? Also how did bub tolerate it?
  • Thanks ladies! I am going to try spinning babies and see how I go. I suppose part of me thinks that maybe she is breach for a reason as @jat0624 said re: cord etc. I guess whatever will be will be. As long as she comes out healthy that's the most important thing :)

I am in the breech camp as well at 35 weeks and had an u/s today. I am
High risk so I have had more frequent u/s and now get 2 a week so that's a lot of people people me she is still breech for awhile now...I have been doing everything for over a month now- and I do mean everything. As a FTM who has hired a doula and was set on a natural pain med free birth I have had to process a lot of anger and frustration at facing a c section possibility for what really is a non emergent issue. So today I finally started researching c sections and found info on "natural" ones that try to make the experience as family friendly as possible- so delayed cord clamping, immediately skin to skin until you get get stiched up, etc and it so helping me feel better if that is where this is all ends. Definitely try some of the spinning babies techniques and if you can a webster certified chiropractor and/or acupuncturist.

  • I'm sorry that you're bummed -- it's totally understandable!  As others have mentioned, you may try a chiropractor or a physical therapist.  I just heard from a doula we met with in NYC that there are PTs that specialize in this, apparently some with very high success rates!  As others have said as well, there is still time for baby to flip on her own (even if your OB thinks the chances are low) so I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!!

I'm just over 36 weeks.  Last week on Tuesday, I was informed he was breech.  I went to a chiropractor on Wednesday and had lots of movement on Thurs and Friday.  I saw the chiro again last night and I'll see him on Monday before my appointment on Wednesday.  My first daughter was completely natural so I'm hoping this guy can be too!
