Cloth Diapering

Heavy wetter questions

So right now I have 9 diapers prepped and more on the way. Today we decided to try a few dipes out to get the hang of things. The first one we put on hm was a BG AIO because we were going for a long walk and I wanted it to last and we had no problems. The second one was a pocket diaper that I had stuffed with one minky insert (it did come with two) and after about an hour we had leakage. So what do I stuff his day time dipes with? Just use both inserts? Put a prefold in there? Get hemp inserts??

My other problem is overnight. Right now I put a pocket diaper on him that is stuffed with both microfiber inserts it came with (one long, one short) and I'm hoping it doesn't leak. What do you do for overnight? DS is 5 months and wake ups are still all over the place, but I usually change his diaper once per night. I would like to get away with only having to feed him and put him right back down so I don't wake him too much. I know it is a wait and see if the microfiber works, but I guess I'm just wondering if someone has a heavy wetter what do you do? I do have some bamboo fitteds on the way and 2 bamboo inserts.

Also my baby has a huge butt now lol! I guess that takes some getting used to huh?!?

Re: Heavy wetter questions

  • Is the minky insert for an old style Fuzzibunz? Those suck. Try a different insert. Like a prefold tri folded or bamboo. For ON for that stage I'd either do fitteds or 1 microfiber insert over a hemp one.

  • It's a bumpkins diaper. I'm hoping it was user error cause this fit him so well. I have tons of prefolds so I will give that a try!

I have a super soaker and usually stuff pockets with a hemp and bamboo or microfiber over hemp and it usually lasts two hours. I prefer prefolds and fitteds under covers. Overnight same deal I use a fitted with pul or wool cover. He doesn't get changed for 12 hours or he thinks it play time so he has super bulk. I use a Twinkie Tush Night Night as is or a Kissaluv fitted with two hemp and a bamboo added. I am not kidding he is soaked by morning but no leaks this way and with the stay dry layer his skin doesn't feel wet. One microfiber insert is not even a challenge to my guy he leaked out of a pocket stuffed with a charcoal bamboo and hemp insert over nap time today in a bit less than 2 hours.

  • I hate my bumkins diapers.  They always feel slightly damp.

The fitted should be a great overnight option though.  MF probably won't be your best bet for overnight.  In addition to being as absorbent as a natural fiber like hemp, they are also prone to compression leaks.

For overnight, we use either a Best Bottoms cover with a doubler and a cotton/hemp insert, or we use a fitted (I have goodmamas and sbish) and a few different options of covers (flips and nicki's covers both fit well over fitteds.)

  • Our inserts are mostly either bamboo or a bamboo or hemp with an extra microfiber layer (a blueberry used to make these but if don't think they do anymore). We use fitteds over night. If you have a super soaker be careful using just hemp, it absorbs more slowly and if they pee a whole bunch all at once it might leak. Bamboo is a little better or you can mix hemp and microfiber. Microfiber on tips own almost guaranteed won't be enough.

Ok, how bulky are those inserts and do they fit into BG's as well?

  • I don't think they're bulky. They fit in the bg pockets I have. I don't have a baby to put them on right now or I'd take a pic. Like I said, mine are a slightly different style, though (they just fold in half not in thirds)
