Cloth Diapering

Inbetween sizes? Help!

We just decided to CD our 6 week old (11-12lbs) lo. She seems to be at an awkward size as she's too big for NB and too small for most One size. Is there an option for Inbetween sizes to save me money? Or just wait another month?

Re: Inbetween sizes? Help!

  • Size 1 Thirsties Duo Wrap and prefolds?

Usually OS diapers start fitting at about 10 lbs... but are really bulky looking at first.

  • I just find the rise too big in most even folded down. They are so bulky! I have some BG elemental sand they look massive on her!!!

They will look big (be big) especially compared to a newborn diaper. We moved exclusively to OS at 5 weeks I believe. So it is doable.

If you aren't getting leaks than it works... If the newborn ones are leaking but "fit" you need more absorbency and could add a cloth wipe.

ETA: we used BGEs (old style). If you have the new style they do fit much larger. Other OS diapers should be able to fit though.

  • Kawaii pure and natural. $10 I think. If she's that big, they should fit. I changed when my baby was right around 10lbs

  • Thirsties Duo Wraps size 1 should work well for covers.  We're still able to use them at 4.5 months (with osocosy infant/size 1 prefolds, although we just tri-fold now, doubt they would snappi anymore).  They claim to fit up to 9months/18 lbs, although I doubt we'll manage to still fit in them for that long.

BestBottoms work well early on (either as a cover over snappied prefolds, or with their small snap-in inserts).  We started using them as backup covers ~2weeks, and were using them more often and using the inserts by 1 month.  They are One-Size, but they have 4 rise settings where as most other OS diapers only have 3 settings, so you can get a really small fit with them.  Once your LO gets bigger you'd only need to invest in larger inserts (or larger prefolds if you prefer) to continue using them.

Bumgenius pockets with the newborn inserts fit for us pretty well at 1 month.  The Bumgenius Elemental AIOs even though the legs & waist & rise were similarly sized didn't fit well early because they were bulky between the legs and very 'square'.  We didn't use them much until ~ 3 months, and they still aren't a favorite.

If want to get try a couple newborn AIOs (particularly if you think you may have another child that will need a newborn stash to justify the expense), there are some newborn AIO diapers that will fit longer.
Blueberry's Newborn Simplex are very absorbent and we continued to use them until LO physically outgrew them at 3months.  They were great for easy middle of the night changes and by far my husband's favorite diaper.
Thirsties Duo size 1 AIO's aren't as absorbant, but have an optional pocket and rise snaps (we had to start stuffing the pocket at ~ 4weeks, and with the added bulk of stuffing the pocket outgrew them at 4months).

    What about flats?

Depending on how quickly your LO grows, you could be at the in-between stage for a while or you might be out of it while you are waiting for new diapers to arrive in the mail. DS is a beanpole, so even though we had some OS diapers that supposedly fit starting at 12 lbs, his legs didn't fill out enough until he was closer to 14-15 lbs and we tended to get a lot of leg leaks.

Hopefully at 6 weeks your LO isn't too squirmy so you can deal with the learning curve of folding flats. You can get a great fit once you find a fold that you like. And they are super-trim! If you have OS pockets, they probably came with MF. A lot of people retire their MF after a while and stuff their pockets with natural fibers. Flats make great inserts for pockets. So you would be able to use them beyond this in-between phase.

ETA: I didn't discover flats until later, but we used GMD yellow edge and red edge for months, until the OS diapers began to work for us.
  • I second best bottoms. They snap down really little, plus we really like the ai2 style. They are especially convenient for travel.

  • Alva colorsnaps fit DD in that awkward inbetween sizes period. As did kawaii PnN and LGB, and I have some old sized BGs that are smalls. She was a little peanut with skinny legs for a long time, so my inbetween sizes stash made sense!
