Lovenox ow ow ow!!

Hi ladies, I typically post on PAIF, but today I started Lovenox and I thought this might be a good board to get some responses about Lovenox. Today was my first dose (60) and ouch!!! After 2 IVFs and one FET, I thought I had experienced the worst in terms of injections, but this drug takes the cake. Even PIO didn't burn for this long afterward. Any strategies to make the burn lessen?

  • Some people ice the area before hand. Check out the lovanox buddy thread for lots of good info :)

Thanks for the tip. I thought about I've, but wondered if it would help since the needle doesn't hurt, it's the meds. I will check out that thread! Thanks again.

  • I inject as slowly as possible. Also, I've noticed, the farther back on my hips (away from my stomach) I inject, the less it hurts. From what I've experienced, pressure after the injection makes me bruise.
    Hope this helps.

  • Yes, I've found that if you inject the med a little bit slower, that helps. And, that sometimes I feel the needle go in, and sometimes I don't. I have no rhyme or reason to it. I tend to bruise more if I do it on my lower abdomen, but it hurts less b/c there's more flab there. And, also, if I put ANY pressure on it, whether its direct (from me) or indirect (from my pants or undies rubbing), that makes it more tender and bruise more afterwards. I've never tried ice, and I feel like that could affect the absorption of the medication. If the skin is cold and those capillaries are constricted, it might not absorb as well. Just a few thoughts...

  • I've also found that the slower the better. The burning will easy I only notice it some days more like little sting
  • I am not on lovenox, but on a similar one, innohep, I pinch my site before injecting, also numb the place with ice, then I insert them as slowly as possible and take them out still pinching the site once done I rub it with ice.
  • My DH is an EMT and laughs at how slow I insert the needle. I told him I do what works for me! And the stinging doesn't always happen but when it does, it's usually when I start to push the liquid in. This is my first time taking Lovenox while pregnant.... I am supposed to take it until about 6 weeks after she's born. I'm curious, how long has or is everyone else having to take theirs? And I'm also having a csection.... They said I have to change to heparin about 5 weeks prior to my csection because of the spinal possibly not working a long with the Lovenox. Anyone else have this happen?
  • Right. That's what they told me I'd end up on at around 35 weeks, was Heparin. I don't know much about it. Is it an injection as well? What's the difference between Heparin and Lovenox?
  • My Dr said that Lovenox can interfere with an epidural or spinal and that's why they have to change it so many weeks in advance. I'm assuming it's because it can cause those pain injections to not work!?
  • Sorry but what is the Lovenox Buddy Thread? Where might this be found?

  • @kaiyagirl29 - Actually the problem with Lovenox and epidurals has to do with spinal hemorrhage.  It has been well documented that a spinal or epidural while on Lovenox can cause bleeding around the spinal cord that can result in temporary or permanent paralysis.  It sounds scary, but these doctors know what they are doing and that is why the either switch us over to Heparin or give enough time between the last Lovenox injection and the epidural/spinal.  I am headed towards a RCS and this has been one of my biggest concerns, but I am at the point where I just have to trust that they have done this enough times to know what is safe!
