Talk to me about croup....

I hope I am wrong on this.... LO came home yesterday with a temp of 102. After my husband came down from the ledge (I wasn't home)..... He gave her Tylenol- fever came down etc. no sings of pain persay but she's been exhausted. Today her fever didn't really spike much a went up once around 6pm but not even to 101. However I noticed a Barky cough today and am now terrified this is croup. The thing is however, the cough is not always there and happens much less than not happening. Hope that makes sense, in easier terms its infrequent. Moms who hbtdt what do you think???

Re: Talk to me about croup....

  • One more detail -she had her 1 year old shots last Wed and the dr said how it was a live vaccine and she could have a reaction for up to 10 days. DH spoke to same dr after hours last night and he said he suspected it was a reaction from the shots......personally it seems like a bit too much to be a reaction to me, but I'm no dr.

  • My LO had croup and the barky cough was infrequent during the day and then picked up at night. We did have him taken by ambulance to ER because he was having lots of trouble breathing. At home care included humidifier and windows open to let cool air in. Tylenol for fever.

  • C went to the doctor on Thursday for a bark like cough that was worse first thing in the morning when waking up and he is rattles a lot when breathing, especially, when crying. He does cough during the day, but his bark isn't nearly as bad. However, C has not had a fever. A steamy bathroom and cool mist humidifier are recommended. The doctor put him on a steroid for 6 days.

I'm trying to figure out what to do about tomorrow. We are supposed to go to my grandparents where they are going to meet their six month old cousin. C has been on the medicine since Thursday, so he will have 3 days worth of treatment. I figure I will call my grandmother tomorrow to see if my cousin's baby is going to be there and if so, let her know so she can inform my cousin. Or one of us will stay home with C and the other will take D.

I hope little one starts to feel better and that it is just a reaction to the vaccine.

  • My daughter (9mo) has had a hacking cough all week. Started Monday with goopey eyes, cough got worse and she had a 101.5 fever on tuesday (sent home from daycare) H stayed home with her Wednesday and she seemed better (except the cough) until she spiked a fever again. More tylenol and her fever went down. I took her to the Dr. thursday am and she's got brochilitus (sp) which is an infant's chest cold. Because they can't blow their nose, it causes fluid in the lungs. Dr. said coughing is a good thing b/c it breaks it up. BUT the fever was not caused by the cold, rather an ear infection.....she had fluid in both ears, but one was infected.

Apparently this is really going around my area right now. All her friends in daycare have it, the Dr's 7 month old has it and while I was in the waiting room there was another infant with the same cough....

Hoping its not croup...good luck and hope your LO feels better soon.

  • Well in good news - no cough today and no issues overnight! She's been crabby today and is currently sleeping on me after she already had an hour and 40 min nap today!!!! She's definitely not herself. I hope it passes soon! Thanks for the feedback!!
