Aversion to Water??

Hi ladies!! This is my first pregnancy and we will be 10 weeks tomorrow.  I've read that it is very common to have an aversion to water and was wanting to know if any of you have experienced this?  I have tried it with ice, room temperature, with fruit, etc... with no luck.   I've tried to push through the nausea and consume a little because I know how important it is.  Do you have any suggestions on an alternative?  If you had this problem, what helped you?

I appreciate any and all advice.  :-)

Re: Aversion to Water??

  • I usually drink a lot of water, but it is just so blahhhh right now! I do drink a ridiculous amount of milk daily. I also started drinking Gatorade which has made me feel better.
  • Loading the player...
  • I hate water always but I've been trying to drink more. I drink cold sparkling water like Perrier. I also only take little sips at a time. I was chugging water at first because I think it's so awful I was just trying to get it over with. That made me even more nauseous.

  • Water had been my drink of choice 95% of the time for over 10 years. I hit 8.5/9 weeks and can only get sips down here and there. Mostly when I go for a run. I've been doing vitamin waters to try and stay hydrated but holy cow do I miss water. You are not alone!
  • This makes me feel so much better knowing I'm not the only one!! Even though I hate that you all are dealing with it too! I just read that Smart Water is a great choice because the water is made from steam. It is not as "heavy" as other waters. I'm going to try it tonight and will let you know how it goes. Who knew being pregnant would turn me into a water snob? Haha

  • I'm the same way. I started adding lemon slices (or lemon juice) or lime slices to my water and that helps a bit. Ice cold water tastes better for me so I usually fill a water bottle with the lemon and leave it in the fridge for a bit. I assume you could do the same with fruit. Flavored sparkling water or watered down juice (cranberry/lemonade/oj) also is much better than just plain water for me.
  • I add a splash of whatever juice we have on Hand in my water.. Probably like a 3:1 water to juice ratio & am able to get it down so much easier than if it was plain water.

  • I had it last time And this time. My solution is to not drink water. Boom. All I can stomach lately is oj.

  • I've been like that for a while too! Luckily it's finally starting to pass. My husband is a paramedic so while I wasn't drinking my fluids or holding much down, he was hooking me up to IVs at home so I didn't get dehydrated.
  • You can also try eating watermelon to help with fluid intake, as it contains a high water content for a fruit.

I am having the opposite thing right now. Normally I have a hard time stomaching water, but since I have been pregnant it is what I prefer.
  • I can't stomach it! I'm not a big water drinker but usually I put a lemon slice in the water plus ice cubes and that's how I consume. Lately, sometimes it works and sometimes I end up regretting it lol

When water changes into steam isn't that only a change of its physical state and not a chemical one? The resulting condensation would still be the same water wouldn't it? I think Smart Water is trying to sell you some serious bs! It is basically distilled water with electrolytes added.

  • I find myself drinking a lot of caffeine free tea. I'm not able to tolerate plain water much either.

^Totally correct. I admire the Smart Water marketing people for coming up with convincing b.s., but it is total crap. Even if they convert the liquid to steam and then recondense to liquid, nothing is changing about the chemical composition or the density (what they call heaviness). It's basically the same as tap or any other water. Bottled water in general is such a waste of money, but this takes the cake. Thanks for giving me an idea of a real world example to use in my chem class, though!

  • This might sound weird, but I find water a lot more appetizing when pregnant if I drink it with a straw. This is consistent with my last pregnancy.
  • I've tried ginger ale in between water tries. Water makes me queasy and I force it down. But ginger ale helps
  • i'm into club soda with lemon right now

  • Seltzer's been working for me - we bought a Soda Stream a couple of years ago and I LOVE it. Of course, now I want a Coke.

This.  Made a world of difference during my last pregnancy.  So far I'm ok with water, but I didn't start having this until about 10 weeks last time.

Straws are my new favorite friends. I rarely used them before and now I rarely drink without one. So weird.
  • Has to be ice cold for me....and a straw helps a lot!

  • Anyone else still having trouble with water? I hit 11 weeks today and still can barely stand water but I'm getting so VERY frustrated not being to drink it. I'm getting sick of vitamin waters and basically everything that isn't water.
  • Yes! I'm 11 weeks tomorrow and I'm still having trouble. I'm so so thirsty but can't seem to drink anything. If I drink anything with a bit of sugar in it (juices, fresh fruit in water, soda with no caffeine, etc...), I feel like I have a sugar coated tongue. Yuck.

  • I am 11 weeks 3 days and having the same aversion to water as the rest of you ladies. This is my first pregnancy so I was pretty surprised by this. For all the other women who have been through this before.. When does it seem to go away?
