The Littlest Pigeon Hatched! (Birth Story with PIP)

Short and sweet...

Scarlett Cecilia was born on Sunday, April 6th at 4:12pm. She was 8lbs 3ozs and 21 inches.

Full story...

My water broke while eating lunch at Olive Garden at 1pm on Saturday, 4/5. Classic. I felt like a movie person.

We went to the birth center a couple hours later. I was checked at at 2.5cm and 80%, at the -1 station. I labored at the birth center med-free for about 12 hours without making much progress. I had incredibly painful back labor. It was so intense that I couldn't really feel the contractions because the back pain was so intense. Our midwife and nurse were so incredible trying all different types of positions trying to get the baby to move with no success. The back pain was so constant I was getting no break between contractions.

At 7am Sunday morning they checked my progress and I was at 4cm and 90%, 0 station. Things started to become a little scary at this point. While doing the internal check a pocket of water opened and the midwife found meconium. They immediately hooked me up to monitor the baby and found her heart rate to be very high. They checked my temperature and it was 102.5.

The midwife and nurse at this point gave me two options; I could continue to labor med-free in the birth center with the knowledge that due to the baby's position (she was facing up and her head was stuck in my pelvis at a weird angle) and distress there was a good chance we would need a c-section, or we could transfer to L&D to get an epidural with the hope it would decrease the back labor and this the stress on the baby allowing things to move along faster. Even though I really wanted a med-free birth, I knew it was selfish to continue in the birth center.

We got to labor and delivery I was given oxygen and they placed the epidural. It knocked out a lot of the pain except for in my tailbone due to her position. I was able to sleep for a couple hours. When they checked me at 2pm we had made it to 7cm and 100%, +2 station. We called our families and let them know thing should be happening pretty soon.

My tailbone pain started to become a lot worse and I felt the urge to push. They checked and we were ready to go! They turned off the epidural to push and we started pushing. The baby had still not changed position so it was slow going and pretty painful.

After about an hour of pushing the midwife and nurses started to get nervous about the baby's heart rate and my heart rate and I was given oxygen. When the baby's heart rate reached over 210 and mine reached just over 180 they said we needed to get her out now or they would need to use a vacuum. I did not want any part of that and we managed to push her out with the help of an episiotomy.

She came out facing the strong direction, but screaming! I will never ever forget the moment they put her on my chest. I get emotional thinking about it now. My husband cut the cord and then our LO had to be given to the ICU staff to be checked due to her distress during labor. She was perfect and even scored a 9 on her Apgar!

When they took her away I started having a hard time seeing and hearing, the midwife and nurses were still very serious and working on me. They have LO to my husband for skin to skin and that was when I knew something wasn't right. DH later told me that I was bleeding so much they put a pan under me to catch it. The midwife told me I was having a lot of internal bleeding and they were having trouble finding the source and how to stop it. They called for a hemorrhage kit, started medication to slow the bleeding, and continued to stitch things up. After about an hour they were able to completely stop the bleeding and I was able to feed LO. I found out later I had lost
between 3.5 and 4 liters of blood.

Even though no part of our delivery followed the birth plan I can't be upset because I have a perfect baby girl. I get so emotional thinking about her entrance to the world and can't imagine how I lived this long without her.

Now for baby pictures!!!
