Prometrium

So Sarah wanted me to reach out to find out if any of you have used prometrium suppositorys? If so, what was your experience with them. Right now she's to use them for 15 days following IUI and take a test on the 17th day.

Coming off of a rough dr. Appointment yesterday that left us both feeling uneasy. Weird vibe in the office and the doctor acted like we had never tried before. He had wrote down we were going to try letrizol again even though she had poor response. We did follistim last time and responded great! Why would we give up and go back to what doesn't work. The medication nurse did her baseline while Dr. Sat in his office. In my opinion, he should at least have been viewing the pics that were coming in to him as she was taking them. He didn't even look to see what cycle day she was on.

We LOVE this office and have loved him, but if our first appointment had been like this I think we would have left! Hoping for the best but could use some advice with this medicine.

Re: Prometrium

  • Hi!
I am a prometrium vet :). I took it for each of my 4 IVF transfers, and with both pregnancies through 12 weeks. I had to do 3 per day from essentially CD14.

Here's my two cents: Progresterone is basically like adminstering PMS-in-a-pill. I would get really irritable for the first few days, breast pain/extreme tenderness, tender belly and fatigue. I know, sounds fun! But, I did always find I adjusted a bit once I got in the groove. And, I reminded myself it kept the baby healthy.

Logistically, tell Sarah I highly recommend pantyliners and it does dribble out a bit for most people. Second, I suggest a phone alarm for the mid-day dose - it's hard to remember otherwise. They have a liquidy center so be mindful about carrying one around in your pocket as if they get too soft they may burst (yes, it happened but only 1 time). I did keep a few at work, in my bag, etc. so I was never without one handy.

I'm sorry you had a crappy appointment, hopefully it was a fluke and all will go well from here. FX for you both!

  • @2MamazInSeattle‌ - Thank you for sharing that information. I will be starting Endometrin suppositories on Monday. I remember the panty liner suggestion from previous threads, but the rest of the info is helpful to know.

@AandStilltrying‌ - Sorry your appointment was so rough. I hope it gets better from here and that things move along smoothly for you both. Always keep in mind that you are your own best advocate. You have every right to ask questions and speak up.

  • I recommend asking for an applicator at the pharmacy.  The deeper you can get the suppositories up there, the slower it'll spill out.

Yes, PMS in a pill is definitely how I'd describe it.  If Sarah gets crabby let her be!  She'll get back to normal :) And if she gets hungry, FEED HER.  Because progesterone makes me crave, crave, crave all the foods.

Good luck!  Sorry your appointment wasn't what you expected but I hope it all works out in the end.

  • Yes - agreed with @wishiwaspreggo - cravings can happen too. J was GREAT with me when I was feeling emotional or irritable, she'd say "honey, this isn't you, it's that stupid prometrium." and it helped me settle down and realize it was hormones, and a bit out of my control, etc. which helped me from feeling out of control!

  • I am on the ole Prometrium until 10 weeks and am just so excited about... Oh, I joke... But I would do far more for a healthy little baby!
Our experience... The first couple of days I was a bit of a nightmare. Luckily, I had the experience of quitting a couple of years back, so I know when I am snappy due to chemical things. A just took some deep breaths and reminded me to do the same.
The first time I took them, it made me unreal tired... This time, not so much.

The chest pain is a definite, but as a trans guy who wear's binders I felt the more constructive the undergarment, the better.

I didn't/don't have a ton of leaking... But I only do two a day... So that may be the difference.

One big thing to note is the prometrium does mimic a lot of early pregnancy symptoms, so don't read into those too much!

    Okay, there's my two sense!

  • Thanks everybody. Seems it works the same as far as symptoms go if it is in pill form and digested or shoved up and ingested. I have taken it to start a period when I went several months without one.

I may be one of the rare people for whom it didn't cause irritability or any other mood things.  I did have leakage, but it was tolerable.  The sore breasts, on the other hand, were a bit miserable.

    Yes to pantyliners.

  • I'm sorry you had a bad appointment. That is a super crappy, frustrating, and alienating experience. We put so much time, money, and soul into trying and when we don't feel like the RE's office is even paying attention, it is really horrible.

As for the prometrium, others have talked about all the advice Id have. I will say though that if you're at all concerned about this part of your REs advice, I wouldn't be. I've heard progesterone described as the miracle drug and it seems pretty fitting to me. Something so simple and comparatively inexpensive can significantly decrease miscarriage rates and seems well worth the side effects!
    ****loss discussed*****

We're queer. I'm 33, have severe stage 4 endo, and had both fallopian tubes removed. My love ("Manada" on the boards, 32) was diagnosed with diminished ovarian reserve. We did Partner IVF (my eggs, her uterus). We lost our twins Tavin and Casey at 21 weeks gestation.

    Our IUIs
with @Manada: IUI# 1-7 (December 2012- September 2013) all BFN. Tried natural, femara, clomid, puregon/follistim, clomid and menopur combo, both the ovidrel and HCG triggers.

    Our IVFs:
IVF #1 my eggs November/December 2013: Cancelled IVF due to poor response

    IVF #2 my eggs/Manada's uterus January/February 2014
BCPs and lupron overlap Stimmed: 1/22-2/2: Bravelle and Menopur (dosage ranged from B300 and M150 to B375 and M150 to B300 and M225)
2/4 retrieved 10 eggs. Endo was much worse than expected. Only 3 eggs fertilized; February 7 transferred two day 3 embryos, froze one. All great condition.
    BFP eve of 6dp3dt; Beta 1 (11dp3dt): 110; Beta 2 (13dp3dt): 175; Beta 3 (15dp3dt): 348; Beta 4 (19dp3dt): 2222; Beta 5 (21dp3dt): 4255
    1st ultrasound (3/6  6w 1d): TWINS!!!! Twin A measuring 6w1d with a heartbeat of 118bpm. Twin B measuring 6w0d with a heartbeat of 113bpm.

***July 18, 2014 we lost our beautiful babies at 21 weeks gestation. They were born too early. Tavin Sara T. and Casey Elizabeth T. are beautiful and precious and we will love them and miss them forever.***

    FET #1 December 2014
Intralipid infusion on Dec 10. Transfer of 1 day 3 nine-cell embryo into my uterus on Dec. 19. (acupuncture immediately before and after)
    BFP on Dec. 27; Beta 1 Jan 2 (14dp3dt): 665, Beta 2 Jan 4 (16dp3dt): 1859, Beta 3 Jan 6 (18dp3dt): 4449, Beta 4 Jan 10 (22dp3dt): 12,251.
