Refusing a bottle

I EBF for 4 weeks and started giving LO one bottle per day at 4 weeks. For 4 days she took it fine, now she has refused it for the last 5 days.

I have tried all the basic stuff, I leave the room, I give the bottle, husband puts my shirt on his chest, warm bottle, 3 different nipples... Currently I am trying this boob to bottle thing and giving my boob for a minute and switching to the bootle. She will take the bottle for a minute and then starts to scream...

Anybody have any other tips or suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Refusing a bottle

  • I don't have any advice really but my lo refuses to take bottles too. We finally got him to take one last night but I had to leave the room completely and not say a word. We also tried three different bottles and four nipples, he seems to do best with the dr browns bottles. DH had to keep him almost sitting up and burp him a lot but after 30 mins he finished 2.5 oz and then slept on him for 3 hours. It brought tears to my eyes because that's the first time they've really cuddled. It's really upsetting to me because I want DH to be able to feed him once a day and he needs to take a bottle obviously for daycare. Another option we read about was switching to a preemie nipple because they have to actually suck a little more to get the milk out but we haven't tried that yet. Good luck! You're not alone.

  • I've had some breastfed daycare babies refuse bottles and I've gotten them to take them by holding baby in the cradle position right against my clothed breast and sneaking the bottle up from below baby's chin so s/he doesn't see and what s/he is latching onto.
