Need some reassurance please!

Just saw my OB. I am 39w2d. At last week's appt I had made zero progress and baby's head was still floating. Now I am 2 cm / 50% effaced and baby has dropped.

He offered me an elective induction tomorrow for no medical reason - just because I am at term and progressing. I turned it down. Then he tells me he will be on vacation all week next week and there are a couple of different OBs covering for him, none of whom I know. He feels pretty sure I will go into labor some time before he is back from vacation so unless I go into labor tomorrow someone else will deliver my baby.

I am delivering at a great hospital and know I will be in good hands but this still freaks me out. I don't want to elect to have an induction based on him not being here but now I am scared and until now I have not been worried about this delivery at all. The birth of my DS was really pretty easy.

If I have not delivered by Monday the 21st he will induce me.

So please tell me I made the right choice and that it will be okay. Anyone else have their baby delivered by an OB they don't know?

  • Yep. No clue who will deliver my baby and I really don't care. As long as I make it to the hospital before LO is born. I think you made the right choice.

I'm with a midwife practice and will get whomever is on call, which includes MWs from satellite clinics that I will have had no chance to meet.

  • I wouldn't have an induction for that reason. You made the right choice. My SIL saw the same OB for 2 of her pregnancies and he didn't deliver either of her kiddos because hewasnt on call. She ended up really liking the other OB who delivered her!
  • You've got this. It's not your first rodeo and if you are confident in yourself it won't matter who is there to "catch the baby" especially if like you said you are going to be at a great hospital. As a FTM I can't speak to the unknown OB factor but maybe you can get the names of those covering and check out their practice websites so you are at least familiar with a face just in case.
I would have made the same choice. It has been drilled in that unnecessary inductions are not the way to go and you have to do what you feel is right for you and the baby.

  • Right choice. With dd1 I was delivered by 'my' OB, but I'd just moved at 36w, so I hardly knew her. This time, she was out on maternity leave, and I was delivered by the newest OB in the practice- who joined when I was 36w. Something about 36w and new doctors is really my style.

also, while my OBs did spend a lot of time with me while I labored, the nurses are there a bit more, and you never know who that will be.

  • Thank you everyone! I was almost in tears just because this really threw me. I don't think either of us thought I would make it to this point because DS was early so I am guessing that is why he has it said anything about being on vacation the week I am due until now. I know I made the right choice and it will be okay but really needed the reassurance.

  • I wouldn't have agreed to the induction either. I probably wouldn't even agree to the on on the 21st either, but that is just me. I agree that having a strong support staff and good nurses is more important than the Dr. that ends up catching the baby.
  • I think it's the right choice. I think the nurses and your DH will be more important.
  • I go to an OB practice that has about 6 doctors and you see whoever is available and when you go into labor you get whoever is on call. I just had my baby onSubday and unfortunately I got the exact doctor of the 6 that I wanted to deliver the baby the least! And even though her bedside manner needs some work, she is a capable professional and honestly- the labor nurses are more important I think as far as experience. I had two amazing labor nurses! Loved them to pieces! And they are the ones checking on you and that are there for the whole labor while the doctor just shows up at the end. I say don't sweat it one bit! Especially since you are a STM. You will go in and do what you need to do and the nurses will take great care of you and whoever shows up to catch the baby will do a great job and all will be well! :)
    Good luck mama !
  • Thanks again everyone.  I told DH and he was freaking out a little, especially since we last did this 8 years ago.  So I was calming him down on the phone - LOL.  Anyway, I am feeling better now.  I do know one of the docs who is covering - I have never been to her but she has delivered three babies for my friend, so maybe I will luck out and get her.

  • My OB wasn't there to deliver ds. I honestly didn't care. The nurses mattered a lot more :) good luck!

  • There's one MFM on call in the hospital- no clue who it will be and then there's a MW during the day. Otherwise it's residents. I have no clue who will deliver me and really don't care. I also think you made the right choice. ((HUGS)) sorry it threw you... my guess is that turning down the opportunity to be done with your pregnancy and have your doctor deliver you was actually pretty hard!

@haziedaze - Yes, you are right.  I would love to be done, but I know it is better if I wait until my body is ready to be done.  He offered the induction before telling me he will be on vacation, because he didn't want it to sway my decision.  I would definitely feel more comfortable going in knowing he would be the one delivering my LO but since it doesn't look like that will be happening I will just have to roll with it.

  • Carter was born on spring break and my OB told me she would be gone for my delivery (I was induced) and told me the doctor that would be delivering. Then when I was in the hospital it was a whole new midwife that I had never heard of. The doctor that was supposed to deliver was sick. Luckily, I ended up loving the midwife. So much that I plan to use her for baby number 2.
I think you made the right choice!
  • I was going to have an elective induction if I made it to 39 weeks so I could have my OB. Well, I went 3 weeks early and my doctor wasn't in that day. It turned out just fine though. The OB on call was only there for three pushes. Don't worry, especially if your previous delivery went well.
  • I think you made the right choice. No matter when your baby comes, there will for sure be somebody to deliver who knows what they are doing. Might as well keep baby in the oven a little longer and see what happens ^-^
There are also many ways to naturally induce labor that I've been reading up on. If you want to try some of them, it might e helpful, if not then just let baby come whenever it's time :)
  • For sure nurses are the real heros when it comes to medical staff anyway. (In my experience) all my OB did was come in and catch. I honestly couldn't care less which dr in my practice is on call.

You did what was right for you, that's all that matters! Also, my son didn't drop until I was at a 10, he floated the whole time. Try not to even worry about all that. One way or another that child of yours will come out :)
  • You chose what is right for you. I'm sure you will get a great doc and be in good hands.
This time around my OB was out of town, although it didn't matter as DS was delivered by a firefighter. The aftercare at the hospital was given my a doc from my OB's practice I never met. She turned out to be a good doc.
