Dilation doesn't indicate when your water will break or when you will go into labor. My MIL walked around at 6 cm dilated for 3 weeks before giving birth to DH. With all of my pregnancies, my water never broke on it's own no matter how dilated I was. Every woman and every pregnancy is different. Trying to find out how dilated someone else was when their water broke or when they went into labor will be of no help to you whatsoever.
I was dilated 2 cm for weeks before I was induced. My water did not break until the day after they started my induction, I was about 5cm when it finally broke.

This.
I walked around at 6 cm for 6 weeks and when I finally went into labor at 42 weeks the Dr. broke my water at 8 cm.
I was 2 cm dilated and 75% effaced from 37 weeks on. Ended up going 4 days past due and my OB had to break my water in the hospital when I was 9 cm and 100%.
Yep I was 2 cm dialated for 4 weeks... I had to go in for an induction at 41 weeks and only with pitocin did I start to progress. You can be sitting at 2-3 for quite awhile or you can go into labor tomorrow. Only time will tell!
Dilation has nothing to do with when your water breaks and you can actually have a baby without it breaking at all (baby born "in the caul"). Mine broke with my first in early labor and right as I was pushing with my second.
Re: How far?
First time they broke my water at 5. The second time they broke it between 7 and 8.
