Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Not producing as much milk

Hello ladies!  I am currently breastfeeding my 7 month old.  I have noticed the past couple of days that I am not getting as much milk when I pump at work.  I used to get 15 oz (which is what he eats while I am at work) but lately I am getting more like 12-13 oz.  I haven't done anything different.  I pump every two hours while at work and then nurse him right before bed.  He also eats a few times during the night.  Has anyone had this happen?  Is it a sign of my milk drying up?  i was really wanting to breast feed until he was a year.  Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Not producing as much milk

  • Sounds like you are nursing and pumping often- that's great.
It could be a variety of things. I'd check your pump. Have you replaced the membranes recently? That can lower suction.
Do you have any possible clogs or milk blebs?
Could it be a period related dip?

I wouldn't assume your milk is drying up. if you're getting 13 ounces and nursing, you have plenty of milk. You could try pumping with heat on your breasts, increasing breast compressions, and changing pump membranes.

You can also try to add a morning or evening pump in, even if it's just one side. You can try power pumping (on and off for about an hour) while watching tv. Power pumping for a few days can boost overall supply.

you could also think about sending 13 ounces instead of 15 and see how he does. He could be fine with it. :)

  • Thank you so much for your comments!  That helped make me feel better!!!  I am definitely going to try all the above!
  • I also had this happen. For me it was definitely period related and I found that making sure I was taking my daily multi vitamins really helped (I think because of a dip in magnesium during your menstral cycle but I'd look that up to be sure).

Also I was really worried that my milk would dry up over this period but did eventually bounce back - it probably took about three weeks though and now I'm going through it all over again.

GL and try not to stress - babies will be ok either way.
  • Make sure that you are well hydrated and eating enough protein. Try drinking a hot cup of tea while pumping to help you relax.
