Babies: 3 - 6 Months

5mo growth spurt or time for solids?

DD is 5 month 1 week today. She's been consistently eating 19-21 oz per day (plus 2 nursing sessions at night) for a month. Suddenly this week she jumped to 26 oz plus 2 nursing a day. So I'm wondering if there is growth spurt at 5mo or if she is getting ready for solids. We were planning on starting with some solids at 6 mo but if she is ready I guess we could start little early and try some next week. I know she's been chewing everything in sight lately but I have not seen any trace of teeth yet. Did any LOs have growth spurt or increased appetite around 5mo?

  • This is us exactly too. I don't have any advice but I would love to hear advice. My LO has also been watching me eat alot more. She is so much more interested in it.
    Looking forward to any advice!
    thanks!

  • This. My baby is FF but he is now taking 40 ounces most days. I've chalked it up to a growth spurt. We have started introducing solids but not to fill him up at all. He's just playing with his sippy, trying to bring the spoon to his lips, and occasionally managing to get a bit of food into his mouth.

If your LO shows signs of readiness as listed by @Finnaroo then you can start if your pedi approves. But babies should still be getting the vast majority of their calories from BM or formula. As I recall they should still be consuming 26 ounces of milk a day up until their first birthday.

It's recommended that your baby finish a bottle or BF session first and then offer solids.
  • I understand that DD will need BM as main source of food even after starting solids. I was just wondering since she is outpacing my milk supply, if I'll need to provide extra nourishment with FF or solids- or if this is just temporary growth spurt. On Kellymom site lists 4 mo and 6 mo as growth spurt but babies dont develop all at the same time so I wondered if others had seen growth spurt at 5 mo. Today is day 2 and she is still eating well and bit over my supply level. I guess I'll find out in a few days if this will be her new average intake. but she hasnt really shown other signs of solid readiness so I am inclined to hold off introducing solids for now. thanks everyone for your tips.

  • Solids at this age are not given to fill a nutritional void, they're mostly practice. Baby should still be getting their energy from BM and/or formula. I wouldn't take a growth spurt as a sign that you should start solids.

  • @teachervicky: I see. Then I don't think she is ready for solids yet. I think we will stick to the original plan and wait for 6mo and where she is then.

@sing2phins: I am pumping and nursing. but she only likes to nurse once a day. currently i pump every 3 to 3.5 hrs but I think I will try to add an extra pumping session by pumping every 2 to 2.5 hrs and see if that will help. But so far, today is day 3 of her growth spurt and she is still going strong with gulping down milk. I do have some freezer stash but I don't like to use that since that doesn't help to increase my milk production.
    thank you ladies
