Recommend your tablet

I think my laptop may be dying so I think I'll replace it with a tablet. I rarely use my computer for more than internet surfing and I have a work laptop that I bring home nightly - so I could use it if I needed more than a tablet. What do you have? What are your likes/dislikes?

I own all apple products so I am partial to my ipad but I do love that the surface has a. USB drive and Microsoft products...though I think apple is now ramping that stuff up to compete. One thing I would recommend if you travel at all is to get the ipad that has the ability to get 3G service bc though I don't use mine often, AT&T lets you turn subscription on and off as needed and I love that for long road trips or travel where I won't have wifi. I use that once or twice a year and it is like $20 a pop I want to say...it is based on usage though so Any kind of streaming video eats through it . Unless it has changed, apple makes you choose verizon or AT&T when you buy the ipad though...I went w AT&T because they didn't require a contract or monthly service and I lied the flexibility. Not sure if that is still the case. I do a lot of photo and video editing and whatnot on my home laptop (a MacBook Pro) so I personally couldn't give up the home laptop altogether. If you work on any personal projects that require software, the tablet won't work for that.

  • We have an iPad, and it works great, but I have zero experience with other options. We only use it at home, so it's on our wifi, and we don't have any costs associated with needing a 3G network.

  • I also have an iPad and love it.  I did buy a little keyboard to go along with it to make typing out emails and responses on here or Facebook, etc. a little easier.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • We have an iPad Mini, iPad 4th gen and iPad mini with retina display.  Of the 3 i think the Mini with retina display is my favorite.  Perfect size and weight and nice crisp display.

If weight isn't an issue then the iPad Air is quite nice

  • I love my iPad!

  • We have iPads and a Surface Pro. The Surface is great for Office, and is a better substitute for a Windows laptop. But I would chew off my own arm to get to my iPad if someone took it away from me. :). Can't live without it.
  • another vote for the iPad. my mom got the kindle fire a year or so ago because she didn't want to outlay big bucks for an iPad, but she regrets it. i tried to warn her! ;)
  • I vote iPad. I bought mine with really old, soon to expire frequent flyer miles that I would never use. Go figure.
  • I bought the new Kindle HDX this past Christmas and love it. I didn't want the pricier iPad for something that was essentially for entertainment purposes. only. I have zero complaints.  It is fast.  Screen display is vibrant and crystal clear. It is easy to use. I'm an Amazon Mom and love how easy it is to access that account. Internet access is super fast. And it's a fraction of the cost of the iPad. Apple products are super user friendly. But so is the Kindle Fire. I couldn't justify the added cost.

I owned a Nexus in the past but made the switch to Kindle when DD broke my Nexus. Much happier with the Kindle, though I liked the Nexus.

Ipad here too. Just make sure you get enough gigs if you want to watch movies.  I love love it as well.
YES, one thing I regret about my son's Mini is I went with 16GB and there isn't enough space for all his movies.

Yes you can download them from the cloud but would be nicer if there were all there all the time

  • Thanks for the input. I still need to do some research to decide if a tablet is right. I'll take a look at the ipad - I've never used any Apple products.
