Intro and book recommendations?

edited April 2014 in Multiples
*Cautiously waves hello*

I've been lurking for a while and, while I know it's still pretty early, I but wanted to make a brief intro and ask a question. We discovered we were having twins at our 5w4d ultrasound and heard both awesome heartbeats this week at 6w4d. Both babies are measuring right at 6w4d and had fantastic heartbeats (one was 122 and the other 124).

As for my question... This is my first pregnancy (let alone multiples pregnancy!) and I'm pretty clueless. I'm hoping to find some pregnancy books that will be helpful, hopefully some that also apply to multiples. I've already read Dr. Luke's  When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads: Proven Guidelines for a Healthy Multiple Pregnancy (I know that is often recommended) and, while it was helpful in some areas, I felt like a lot of it was pretty big on the whole fear mongering thing. Basically, it made me feel like unless I quit my job and live of Big Macs and milkshakes, my twins are going to be born too early and be in the NICU.

So, does anyone have any book recommendations (other than Dr. Luke's book) that would be a good read?

  • Congrats! Wile I liked dr Luke's book, I also like Mothering Multiples. It is useful beyond pregnancy.

  • Welcome & congrats! Dr. Luke's book was a bit heavy for me too and I never finished it. I haven't picked up any other multiples related books though. I've just been reading standard pregnancy books while keeping in mind that things will be somewhat different with multiples.

  • Congratulations and welcome!  I agree about Dr. Luke's book, but I think if you take her advice with a grain of salt, it's a good book.  I was so scared when I was at 20 weeks and she said I should have gained 25 lbs, I had only gained about 6.  I kept getting mental pictures of these tiny little things living in the NICU for the first year of their life! Even now, at 30 weeks I've barely gained 25 lbs. But the girls are big and growing well, so while I agree with her taking it easy and eating high calorie/fat but still relatively healthy foods, I think it is a pretty heavy, scary book. The most important thing I took from the book is that a twin pregnancy is very different than a single pregnancy, so treat it as such.  Be more aware of your body, rest more frequently and don't try to push yourself too hard.  Good luck, this board is a wonderful resource!

  • Congrats and welcome! I agree on the Dr. Luke book. I haven't read it yet but I've also heard great things about Mothering Multiples. Check out Twintalks.com, great website with tons of useful info and audio podcasts with experts in twin pregnancy. I found the podcast about nutrition extremely helpful. All the info is presented in a positive way which is awesome.

  • My doctor's office gives all the multiple moms Dr. Luke's book and puts them on her diet (175g protein) a day...I agree, its terrifying. I tried super hard yesterday and only got to 100g...sigh. I am loving twin talks if you like podcasts.

  • I am 21 weeks and will occasionally flip through Dr. Luke's book. I agree with what @SandraPB1220‌ says that it mostly brings into focus how different a multiple pregnancy is from a singleton and to honor that. I had a rough first tri and could hardly keep food down so I felt awful when I was 10 weeks and 6 pounds underweight. The Dr. Luke book emphasizes weight gain from day one and down plays morning sickness.

I currently love What to do When You're Having Two by the woman who does the Twinversity website. Buts it's more about prepping for the babies and what to do when they are here.

    A & K, married 7/1/13.

After 10 months of ttc via medicated IUIs and two early losses, we finally got our boys- Perfect premie twins born 5/27/14.
