Zyrtec reaction?

Has anyone on here had a child have an adverse reaction to Zyrtec? I ask because I am noticing some HUGE behavior changes (at home and at school!) In the last week or so. She has been back on the medication for about 2ish weeks.

She is irritable, having HUGE fits (which she doesn't have often), super hyper emotional, and the list goes on.

I didnt give her the meds tonight and plan to call the DR in the morning. I am thinking this may have played into her emotional things we dealt with this fall.

Any thoughts on this... advice?

THANKS!!!

Re: Zyrtec reaction?

  • Definitely sounds possible that she is having a reaction to Zyrtec.  See what your doctor says.  DS takes Allegra.  It is shorter-acting, so any side effects are easier to identify and resolve more quickly.  It stinks because it is the only kids' allergy medicine that's not generic, but we buy it on Amazon subscription.

  • Both my kids take Zyrtec daily and have for years with no ill effects.  I have heard that it can cause some behavior issues in some kids though.

  • Pedi told me that it sound probable for a reaction. He wants me to try Claritin so we will see. She did have a much better day today. Hoping 'coming' off it helps!

  • My son has been taking Claritin daily from March through Memorial Day each year since he was 4.  It's great and no side effects.
