Opinion on Girls Name

Hi! I really like the name Kate but am curious as to the feedback from the experts. ;) Hope you don't mind me asking, no idea what we are having obviously because it's waaay early.  I like traditional names and am not a fan of nicknames.  Don't really like Katherine or Kathleen and Kaitlyn is too popular IMHO.  Is it too boring for an adult?

MN would be either Anne or Elizabeth.

TIA!

Re: Opinion on Girls Name

  • I don't think it's boring, but I personally in the camp that strongly prefers a formal name with a NN.  So for me, Kate would feel imcomplete.

    What about

    Katrina

    Catalina

    Catrin

  • I like Kate Elizabeth.  I think with a short first name a longer middle name tends to sound better.  That being said, I don't really love the short version of a name as a standalone name.  Like just naming a kid Becky or Jimmy.  I think Kate is more standalone than most "short for" names, though...but if it were me I would prefer Kathryn/Catherine/Katherine.

I like the name Kate. I think it's a sweet and spunky name for a little girl, and that it also works for an adult. IMO, it doesn't need a more formal name if that is what you want to call her.

  • Kate (just Kate, not as a nn) is one of my favorite names.  So I think it's great!

My sister is Kate Elizabeth -- loved her name :-)

  • It's been around so long that Kate doesn't really feel like a nickname to me. I much prefer Kate Elizabeth to Kate Anne.

  • I like Kate Elizabeth.
  • I think it's fine as a given name. It's been on the SSA top 1000 names every single year since they started keeping track in 1880. It was actually way more popular as a given name back then, so it's been more than "just a nickname" for many, many people for a long time. Yeah, technically it's a diminutive of Katherine, Kathleen, etc. but a lot of names in common usage now as given names are technically diminutives/short forms such as Eliza, Liam, Juliette, Jack, Margot, Molly, Charlotte, Alison, I believe Lillian was originally a diminutive of Elizabeth, etc.

  • I think Kate works just fine as a stand alone, go for it! Classic, clean and awesome.

  • Thanks, love all the feedback! Anne is my middle name which is why I was considering it since we gave my son my husband's middle name.  I tend to favor Elizabeth though as well and there are three on my mother's side so great tradition there as well! :)

  • I have a Kathleen Elisabeth, whom we call Kate most of the time. I think Kate works fine as a standalone name. (My Kate is named Kathleen after my late MIL. I think Kathleen is beautiful, but it's not my favorite name in the world. I loved it for the significance and the fact that we could call her Kate.)
