Stupid insurance

Just got off the phone with my insurance company (Coventry) and they only cover either manual pump for free or based on my deductible they'll cover part of the expense for a single electric pump. A single!?? Really?? I pumped EVERYDAY with ds1 and when I went to work I pumped during my 12 hour shifts. And we breast fed for 16 months. And my old pump is on its last leg. A single is not gonna get the job done. Ugh....I know I shouldn't complain because some people would even love to have what insurance is offering...but jeez Louise. Just ranting.

Re: Stupid insurance

  • Rant away, that does suck.  Like PP suggested I would try looking into other ways that you could make it stretch for a double pump.  Good luck!

This thread came up at the right time.  My insurance is being a asshat for different reasons.  My Ex-OB's office billed them for prenatal office visits, the code they used, the insurance company thought it meant surgery so they denied paying for it.  After multiple back and forth phone calls that took up my morning I was finally able to clear it up for the insurance company!!!! Its not my job to fix their stupidity.  Even the insurance rep on the phone acknowledged that the code meant office visits.

Does your hospital have pumps you can buy?

My hospital has a little "boutique" where they sell pumps and they know how to get the most out of your insurance... they might be able to help you out.

That's a good idea!! Ill have to see what they offer! Maybe ill call up there and talk to one of their LC's....
  • That does suck, I'm sorry. Thankfully my insurance company was very easy to work with...I got a medela with no hassle and it was shipped to me a couple months ago.

I agree a single pump won't do it. Anyway your insurance company will pay towards a better pump and you cover the rest? I upgraded my pump and insurance covered most of it and then I had to pay some.

  • Sounds exactly like my insurance! I ended up paying the up charge for an electric - thankfully the double one. I agree though, who wants a manual or a single electric?! So frustrating!!!

My insurance plan doesn't cover any kind of pump or offer any discounts/help for getting one. I don't know how they get away with that. I said, "I thought the ACA required all insurance companies to cover a breast pump now." The response was "Well we do, just not for the plan you have."

ETA: I didn't mean to sound like I was one-upping you. Sorry; I realized that after I clicked post. I would be mad if I were you too. Hope you can figure something out.

  • I have a "grandfathered" insurance plan so it doesn't cover a breast pump either. I think it's crap because when I was pregnant before they said they'd cover the pump, but now all of a sudden they don't. I shouldn't complain though that pump was the most expensive baby item we've had to buy thanks to the generosity of our friends and family.

  • I bought one when Target had a sale. My insurance didn't cover it at all. I had to deal with several issues with Medicaid and now my PCM finally got assigned and it's Kaiser. So I had to get an appointment with my PCP to get a referral to stay with my current OB who isn't kaiser and neither is my hospital. Had to speak with their Medicaid supervisor who said since I was in my third trimester that I wouldn't have to change over to Kaiser until after my DD is born. So crisis avoided after three days of phone calls and appointments.
  • I don't think a lot of insurance plans cover pumps anymore unless you're on government assisted healthcare. It does suck. Luckily I got one at one of my showers! Darn things are so expensive!!!
