Terrible nasal congestion

Anyone else having nasal congestion issues?  I am 8w5d and I can't breathe out of my nose.  The bump has one of the symptoms on 9 weeks as nasal congestion due to hormones.  Its causing issues when I try to sleep so I am even more exhausted then I'm used to.  I've tried everything!  Elevated sleeping, hot steamy showers, warm and cool mist humidifier, vicks vapo rub under my nose, saline solution in my nose, breath right strips on my nose.  Nothing is helping.  My doctor gave me a medication list of all the meds that are safe to use.  Benedryl is on there but I'm nervous to take anything for fear of harming the baby.  I'm starting to lose my mind.

Re: Terrible nasal congestion

  • I have it as well but mine is yellow in the morning when I blow my nose so it's attributed to a sinus infection rather then a pregnancy symptom. I haven't taken anything..just riding this out. Hope you feel better!

  • I have the same issues.  I actually took a couple sudafed last night and slept really well.  I'm a STM though...I didn't take anything the first time around!  Too worried about it like you.  Sudafed was on my doctor's approved listing for nasal congestion.  I only plan to take it when I need to at night so I can rest...I'm suffering through the day.

  • Thanks @Lakegirl82.  Sudafed is on the approved list also but Im just so nervous.  Plus DH isn't really supportive of me taking anything but I'm really suffering.

  • I am also all stuffed up!! But like you I'm always nervous to take any medication.. I'm just riding this out too!
  • I had severe nasal congestion which started exactly when I got pregnant! So eerie...at first I did not know what it was then I went to the doctor and told them it was so bad that when i swallowed my ears were getting blocked.  I was told to take Zyrtec (which is deemed the safest during pregnancy) and an prescription nasal spray called Rhinocort.  Rhinocort is AMAZINGLY making a difference but if it is not covered by your insurance (and I have really good insurance and it was not covered for me!), it costs like $180! But my doctor had her people make some requests and submit some paperwork and i got it for $45.  It was pretty unbearable for me.
  • Thanks @kkhamb1.  I have my first OB appt in 11 days (released from my RE this week) and I am going to ask.  I have heard some people are cleared to take things in their second trimester so maybe that will be me too.

  • Good luck! Zyrtec over Allegra for example was better.  Zyrtec was class B whereas Allegra was class C.  Also Rhinocort is topical so it does not go into your blood stream like pills do.  So if you can get away with something that is topical and safe, then I'd ask the doctor about that :)
  • Thanks for posting this! I have terrible sinus issues and have actually had several surgeries to try to help, but I can feel the congestion kicking in (stupid allergies). Thanks!!!
  • It could also be swollen nasal passages and not mucus, which could be why saline isn't helping. So maybe look to see what can help with that.

I was having stuffy nose and constant headaches, and it stopped when I started taking my allergy medicine. Mold is really bad where I live right now, so that was probably it instead of pregnancy (like I thought it was).
  • I'm pretty sure I am swollen rather then stuffed up.  I tried taking a Benedryl last night since my doctor said it was ok but that didn't offer any relief either.

  • Sounds like it. There is one or two kinds of cold medicine which address swollen nasal passages, but I don't know if they are safe for pregnancy or not. Otherwise, perhaps try some tylenol?

Wish I had something better to offer :(
  • Try a sinus rinse if it's mucus. You can get a Neti Pot at most drugstores. It's drug free and flushes your sinuses out to get rid of all nasal irritants. Good Luck!
  • Yeah, it's awful. It's why I'm up posting at 4:30 am--can't breathe!! :)
  • I developed a sinus infection and I think I feel a chest cold coming on too. Lucky me!
  • I'm in the nasal congestion club too. Plus since I can't breath out of my nose I'm mouth breathing and my mouth is SOOO dry I get up 4x a night for something to drink. Water helps some but I'm finding really cold OJ cuts into the dryness like nothing else can. I've gone through 3 bottles this week. I'm drinking like 84+ oz of water, plus coconut water, plus all that OJ! Still feel super dehydrated, way congested with sticky mucus sometimes and sometimes none. I bought a humidifier and it helped a little. I'm seeing my doc on Wednesday as I realized this morning that this dry mouth thing is pregnancy related too. This has been going on for 4 days don't know how much more I can take...

  • @kkhamb1 - I finally broke down and went to the regular doctor.  She prescribed Rhinocort and I've been taking it for 2 days.  How long did it take to actually work for you?  I feel a bit better but I still can't breathe.  I'm so anxious for some relief.

  • This is one of my symptoms and was last time too. I think it's my body's way of protecting myself from all the puking by coating my throat. Or at least that's what I'm going to keep telling myself to feel a little better about it. Boo.
  • I hope your congestion gets better. I woke up with my first bloody nose this morning and of course it was one of the first things I read this morning on my 9 week update email from TheBump.com. I guess they know what they're talking about!
  • I have been having similar issues.  I tried allergy medication b/c I was convinced it was due to the green/yellow powder on all of the cars and I got ZERO relief.  I finally broke down and took Sudafed and TADA - I could breathe again.  I have only taken it a handful of times but when I did it was SO helpful.

  • Yup ! My nose has been congested for a few weeks now. It clears at times.. I deal with allergies at this time so I thought it may be due to that also.
  • I've been having the same issue since even before I knew I was pregnant. I tried no meds the first few weeks, but after my 7-week appointment, I started taking Benadryl at night because my doctor said it was ok, even every night. I wish I didn't need it but I can't sleep otherwise. I'm so congested that the neti pot won't even go through to the other side. It's misery, so I feel for ya.

  • Hi there.

I was just wondering how the congestion was the rest of your pregnancy.

I am in week 10 with 5 weeks of awful swollen nasal passages with no air coming or going.

Did the Rhinocort end up working?  I was just perscribed this and feeling totally desperate.

  • The congestion ended up coming and going through out my pregnancy but the Rhinocort didn't help at all.

Sorry you are feeling this way
