Babies: 6 - 9 Months

6 months old today and still hasnt rolled over...

I'm starting to get worried...  she hasn't rolled front to back or back to front.   she hates tummy time but is starting to get better with it, kicks her arms and feet like crazy for about 2 minutes then, gets frustrated.  She likes when i put a mirror in front of her and play peek-a-boo from behind.  She can already sit up unassisted for a good amount of time before either toppling forward or to her side.  Am i concerned for nothing?  Are some babies just late rollers?

Re: 6 months old today and still hasnt rolled over...

  • DS turned 6 months on Sunday and can only roll onto his side, not all the way in either direction. I pulled up a bideo on youtube that showed how to teach them to roll, so we've started doing that at least once a day. Don't stress too much, they will learn in due time!
  • Mine is 10 months old and has rolled a grand total of 4 times in his entire life lol  I wouldn't say you're worried for nothing but I'll share what my pedi told me.  Most kids roll, yes, but some don't and it's not a matter of ability but of motivation and desire - my kid had neither :)  At his 6 month appointment she asked me to be mindful of his desire to be mobile in other ways - sitting up, leaning, reaching, scooting, hands and knees/rocking, crawling, etc.  She said they would point to signs of his ability to be mobile and make her less concerned about the rolling.  He started doing all those within a month or so.  Still no rolling :)

  • Not to worry. Every baby is different. My son turned 6 months April 3, and on April 2, he rolled onto his tummy, but has not learned how to roll from his tummy to his back yet. Give it time. My baby also hated tummy time, and still does! Haha
  • My daughter is seven months old and she will roll she's on her tummy, but she has not rolled back to belly. So Ì that each child is different. If there are other red flags and your baby isn't reaching, leaning, or sitting while being supported yet, I would be worried but I wouldn't necessarily worry about the not rolling thing yet.

  • My oldest son never ever learned to roll over, ever. lol He never crawled, nothing. My youngest started rolling over at 4 months and is now trying to crawl at 6 months. We haven't done anything different with him than we did his brother. Sometimes babies are just different IMO. I should add my now three year old is perfectly healthy, smart, and active. He was just never great at physical skills.

  • Some babies are indeed late rollers. I know of babies that rolled before my son and I was like why isn't he rolling yet but now he can roll and even crawl. Every baby has their own pace. Don't worry before you know it he will be rolling and crawling and then you will have to watch him like a hawk lol.

  • Thank you ladies!  She just had her 6 month appt and ped said she looks great!  I guess she'll roll when she's ready :) thanks for the reassurance
  • Daphne was 6 months on April 4.  She can roll from Belly to Back, but would rather scream and face plant in drool.  As for back to belly: Nope.  now I have found her on her side a lot at night lately, so I think she is almost there.  She is not fond of rolling.  I don't think all babies are.  She is strong, loves to sit up (still needs a little help); Loves to stand.  So I am not too worried.  And as long as your pedi said she looks good, I wouldn't worry.

Don't worry.  DD2 never rolled.  Well, I guess she did at some point, but she learned to crawl before she rolled.  FWIW, she is incredibly active and co-ordinated, she just didn't feel like rolling, I guess.

  • My daughter is 7 months and still refuses to roll and hates tummy time. She sits up and reaches all around. The doctor said if she has the core to do that she can roll over...she just doesn't want to. I still do tummy time to encourage it but it is nice not to worry that she isn't making her milestones because something is wrong.
  • My six moth old is exactly like yours!
