Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How hot is too hot??

I live in Southern California (inland San Diego County) and we've been having some very weird and warm weather these past couple of days - mid to high 90s. We have AC but as a general rule in our home, we try not to run it unless it's over 100 as the energy bill attached to it can be equally horrific.  However, now that we have a tiny human who cannot regulate heat the same as we do I think we need to revisit our AC rule. Baby is already getting heat rash on her little face from our nursing sessions, and today has been predicted to be only a slightly less hot. Luckily, it isn't horribly humid, or I'd already be turning it on.

So opinions--what is too hot for baby?

Re: How hot is too hot??

  • Can you have some fans running in the room the baby's in to circulate the air, even if you don't have the AC on yet?  That can make a big difference.   Otherwise, just make sure the baby isn't wearing too much clothing.

Is it cooling down at night?  I've read that the room the baby sleeps in should ideally be 65-70 degrees to reduce the risk of SIDS.  I know in our house it's almost always warmer than that, so we just dress him lightly and use a thin muslin swaddle.  We also have a small fan to circulate the air in his room, and it feels pretty comfortable to us.
