Cloth Diapering

Pillows at night?

At what age is bedding okay for babies/kids? M seems to LOVE having his head on a pillow...seems more comfortable. Is a pillow ever okay?

Clearly I'm not cut out for this parenting thing

  • My pedi suggested waiting for 18 months, but admitted that he didn't really have a solid reason why. If I pushed, he probably would have given a nod at 1 year.

  • I'll probably wait until 2-ish. Z has decided she likes to ball her bamboo A+A blankie up lately and use it as a pillow, though. :-/

  • I kind of figured it would be when I felt they were coordinated enough to get out of a blanket or out from under a pillow. Of course, I probably wouldn't worry about giving a pillow if the kid didn't care either way.

  • We just gave one to O this week but I would have felt comfortable giving him one any time after 18 months or so. He just wasn't interested.

We first gave him a regular pillow but he wouldn't really sleep on it. Then I remembered someone gave me a toddler pillow from IKEA so we tried that Sunday. He loves it and sleeps on it all night.

  • I googled this one time, and found an interesting article that said that there wasn't a good reason to wait as long if the pillow was an appropriate size compared to them. A lot depends on their ability to sense things in their sleep, roll, move around etc. But I think ultimately it comes down to the parenting decision and what you are comfortable with. The biggest concern is it being a suffocation risk.

  • I'm so glad you asked this question.  I've been thinking about this, too.  DS takes his blankie and balls it up to sleep on like a pillow.  And he loves to arrange the pillows on the couch under his head.  I'm thinking he might like one.
  • My mom made E a pillow that's her size.  We gave it to her around 15 months because she was balling up her blanket and her teddy and using them as a pillow.  She doesn't always use it as a pillow, but she likes to cuddle it.

  • Right around 2 she started taking a pillow to bed. That or she would ball up her blankets.

She hasn't had an issue with blankets so I'm not conserned with a pillow.

  • Yeah, M will actually pretty much fall asleep and then crawl up to put his head on my pillow at night.  I always moved him off and gave him space with nothing to suffocate him….but now I'm thinking it might be okay.  The kid barely sleeps, so I think his ability to wake up and rearrange his body/head/face is there.

and yes, I realize my pillow is now the appropriate size for him :)

more bad parent confessions:  my kids sleep on adult sized pillows.  they're super flat, but still full sized.  :(

Confession: my daughter sleeps with 4 blankets. If we take one away she starts searching for it.

  • I have been thinking about giving DS a pillow b/c he is fascinated with the ones on our bed and the couches. My only hesitation is that he always sleeps face-down, but I honestly think the pillow would probably wind up in the corner of the crib or something. Oh, I guess my other hesitation is that it gives him something he could possibly stand on to get out of the crib, but that would be a major stretch for him.

um... this on all accounts.  Crap.  I thought it was okay after they could move around good.  To be fair, it was at about 1 that we started a blanket/pillow.  Much to my MIL's dismay that we waited that long.  She thought I was the most ridiculously overprotective parent because I wouldn't give my 5 lb newborn the fluffy blanket and pillow to sleep with each night.

  • I gave him the flattest (adult) pillow in our house somewhere between 15 and 18 months. He was congested and I thought it might help. He seemed to like it so it stayed.

Yeah we do this too when the sleep sack is being washed. We used to tuck it in so it wouldn't move around.

Mine are the tiny ones.  :(  Still like them?

Also @AFwifelife and @yellowlily2013 When E was a newborn, we would swaddle her, then put a blanket over her and tuck it in to both sides of the PNP so she couldn't roll.  Maybe bad parenting, but it worked.  If we didn't tuck her, she'd unswaddle and scream.

Speaking of melons, @Mapleme how the heck are we toting nearing identical fruit at 12 weeks apart?? Maybe I'm crazy, but I always thought cantaloupes and honeydew were about the same size.

Andplusalso, @TJ1979 I love that you gave pretend stoney ginormaboobs since she's fake and all. :p

I never liked beer either until MH started brewing his own.  Then I got really involved in the research and methods, and got all nerdy about it.  So then I had to taste different beers to understand.  YH probably does drink crap beer though.  And my favorite beers taste like coffee, and I love coffee.  This was just never meant to be Jane.

  • Now I want to know what YH drinks @unaveragejane‌ Is it one of those that comes in a can that just says "beer" lol
LOL! No, he's actually pretty picky about beer and won't drink anything out of a can. He likes dark beers mostly but switches to XX or Coronas in the summer time. I just never have liked the taste of any of it. It's what I imagine pee must taste like.
