4 gestational sacs?!?! Quadruplets?!?! What?!

Found out I was pregnant 3/14. Went for first US yesterday...thinking I'm 7.5 weeks. US measures me 4.3 weeks with 4! Gestational sacs! There is nothing visible in them yet. I guess it's too early? What is the probability that they will all 4 develop into a baby? This is crazy! Has anyone ever heard of this? The US tech said she's never seen anything like it! I didn't take any fertility drugs...I'm going to need a reality show to pay for all these children (my husband and I already have 3!)

Re: 4 gestational sacs?!?! Quadruplets?!?! What?!

  • Wow! One of my ultrasound techs said she did an ultrasound of spontaneous quads before. I can't imagine how rare that is.

  • Wow. Our babies were just a blur of fetal poles and yolk sacs and tiny heartbeats at our 6w ultrasound so I am going to guess you won't have a solid answer as to how many are growing in there until about 6-7weeks.

Good luck! Looking forward to your update.

  • Good luck. I can't imagine what you're feeling since I was shocked w twins. Quadruple is amazing
  • Well actually I looked it up and the chances are 1 in 739000 naturally and 1 in 128000 with fertility drugs. I took no drugs! I bought some lottery tickets just in case ;)
  • Damn girl :) that's pretty amazing and I would totally watch your show!

Hope things turn out well however it goes. 4 weeks is still early for anything certain.
  • What do you mean by "found out" you were pregnant on 3/14?

Like, took a pregnancy test and got a pos found out? Because that means you would have already had to have been close to 4w pregnant back on 3/14.

I was at the doctor to get an iud and they gave me a pregnancy test first. My doctor said I may have found out so early bc having quads would put my hcg levels through the roof.
  • Wow, that is a huge surprise!

In order to have any positive test at all, you would have had to have conceived no less than 6 days before the test (and that's being generous - no matter how many blastocysts implanted, it takes 6 to 12 days for them to implant, and hgc is not detectable before implantation) - and you are already two weeks "into your pregnancy" at the time that you conceive - that means that, bare minimum, you would have been 3w pregnant on 3/14 (probably closer to 4w), and would now be between 6 and 8 weeks along. I don't mean to be critical, but did the doctor discuss the odds that this pregnancy might not be viable?

  • Mmmmm basic pregnancy math is just not adding up here....... Dosent matter how many babies are in there. A pregnancy wouldn't turn any sooner than with a singleton.

Yeah... something doesn't add up there.  Add to that the fact that is OP's first post ever and my mind looks something like this inside.

An u/s also wouldn't show much of anything prior to 5wks, it's improbable to see even a gestation sac at 4wks.

  • What is MUD?
  • Well who would waste time by posting on here if it's not even real?! That's stupid. I'm just trying to see if ANYONE else has had 4 gestational sacs on an ultrasound! I found other posts on other websites but they were all years old. Of course this is my first time posting here Bc obviously this has never happened to me or anyone I know. I would never post on a forum if I was pregnant with one Bc I know a million other people in real life that have babies every day so I don't need validation about something that women do every day. I'm not looking for attention. ..I'm looking for answers for a very unique situation. So to everyone who was helpful...Thank you...to everyone else with negative comments....thanks for nothing. Have fun wasting your time all day on mommy boards Bc your life is sooo hard doing something women have been doing for ages.
  • Well with your timeline in which you stated you got a positive HPT and then what your U/S showed it sounds as if its not a developing pregnancy. There would have been visible babies in the sacs at that point. Also I think I would be looking for a new doctor if he told you your HCG was through the roof and thats why it turned the test so soon. HGC is not indicative of how many babies are in there and he should be fully aware of that, if not that would be a huge red flag to me. When is your follow up U/S? Is he concerned at the time in which he gave you the urine test and then to what your sonogram showed?

  • At my six week ultrasound we saw five sacs. The first three had heartbeats. The other two did not. At our 8 week ultrasound we saw four heartbeats and the fifth sac was getting smaller. It could go either way. Most likely you will probably end up with just one baby or twins.

  • To be clear, I did not mean to negatively make presumptions about you or your intentions on this board. I only pointed out dates and timing because it doesn't sound like a viable pregnancy, to me, and if the doctor did not explain the issues with those dates in a cautious, respectful, but very honest manner, I would be very wary of that doctor.

  • Why in the world would you be having unprotected sex prior to an appt for IUD placement??? Disgustingly irresponsible! I am shocked.

  • I'm an ultrasound tech at a fertility clinic. I see multiples often and have twins myself. You could of ovulated earlier than you thought and been a little off with dating that happens a lot. The next thing you want to see if a yolk sac and fetal pole. If you go next time and a sac is empty that you can kind of figure out how many will be viable.
  • That's what I was thinking,

OP are you saying you mc the previous pregnancy... and immediately became pregnant again? Confusing, something is very off.
