I don't have an option... with the PCOS/IR I was just dx with and the endometriosis that I have had since 2010, my doctor said we need to try this first, and then if it doesn't work and I don't ovulate, then she will test DH, our doc's here will not, absolutely test the husband unless he has an existing medical condition... I don't live in the "BEST" town for apt medical care.... I def understand what yal are getting at though... I asked for an SA two years ago, and they said that how they function is to test the female first... and if nothing comes of it, THEN they will test the partner...
Please don't bash me, I just really do not have any other option right now, because we can't afford treatment, plus the cost of traveling to a descent RE... we live in BFE...

Word!
As I'm catching up here, I was thinking this same thing!!! I know doing a SA isn't the funnest or most comfortable thing for a guy to do. But if my husband refused to do it because he thought it was weird, all hell would break loose on him. That is the least invasive, easiest IF related test to do. Seriously, I wouldn't bother with ANY other treatment until we had his SA because what is the point of anything if there are no/slow/deformed swimmers?
As far as clomid for MFI goes, I too remember someone recently saying they were using it @iloveshanej. I don't remember who it was though. But I'm excited for you that you guys have a plan to do something to move forward.

Not bashing you, just absolutely astounded at the incompetence if any doctor proceeding w meds when both parties have not been tested. Like @GraceyandTroy said, least invasive and cheapest test- that they wouldn't do it or you can afford clomid over SA just seems foreign to me. I get that this apparently is a thing, I'm just a little surprised to be honest, not bashing.

The doctors in this area are greedy money whores, the more they can cost you, the happier they are... I do like my midwife, she is monitoring me, but per policy of the facility, she can't order a SA without trying to "fix" me first... I really don't understand why at this either... SA just seems so much easier, and less painful...
I'm not bashing you not do I think anyone else. Clomid shouldn't be used a lot so if you have MFI issues as well then you are most likely wasting Clomid cycles because it won't matter if it helped you to ovulate if his sperm don't "work". Trust me, this is coming from very experienced ladies that have been through years of testing and treatments.

I am going to ask about the SA, and see if we can go ahead and do it and basically point out that I want it done just so we know for sure, so we aren't wasting Clomid cycles for nothing... Idk if DH insurance will cover it or not, but it cant be that much out of pocket can it??
Sorry I am all flustered now... this whole situation stresses me the f out!

Good! It's so worth it! Our insurance covered the SA, but we would have had to go to a specific lab and it was a huge hassle. So, our RE offered a discount and did it for us for $50. Well worth it!
And just to clarify, you're CNMW is the one who is prescribing the clomid? I don't understand that logic of fixing you first and not worrying about your husband. Fertility is a two person issue. Both partners have to be doing their part, both bodies need to be working. I don't know that I would stay with a medical professional who didn't want to take into account the whole situation.
I go to a midwife and she loves that western medicine is a great resource for testing and diagnosing an issue. She doesn't discount it's value, but she obviously looks for other holistic and natural treatments. She focuses on whole health with the idea that if everything is in balance and healthy, then a lot of health problems can resolve themselves. In cases like PCOS, that's a good approach. From what you've shared, I don't know if I would want to continue working with your midwife. But, of course, you have a more full picture and I'm sure you'll do what's best for you and your family.

@Iloveshanej - my DH was on clomid in 2009 to help sperm count. The clomid effects the testosterone, basically supposed to help if his testosterone levels are low. For my DH it did help, we went from infertile to technically having a high enough count to conceive naturally. DH also had vericocele repair after the clomid results were in. This time clomid did not have as great an effect for him. Hope it helps your DH though!
@SassFrass - from my own personal experience don't put yourself through clomid without knowing for sure that DH's SA is normal. It is not worth it! There is an old IF saying MFI is easy to diagnose but harder to treat, FFI is hard to diagnose but easier to treat...this is why they almost always do a SA when your start IF testing.
DD conceived after 3 years of ttc.
MFI - DH had varicocele repair and took Clomid to get DD b. 02/2010
TTC #2 since 6/2010 10/2012 DH diagnosed with Epilepsy A few failed IUIs summer 2012 and 2013. DH taking clomid and waiting to see if he needs another vericocele repair. Hoping for a 2015 baby or babies. Wishing, hoping, waiting.

My DH has been taking clomid since December along with other supplements for MFI. His last SA before starting the clomid was Count: 1.7 million per ml, Motility: 24% & Morphology 2 %. It was prescribed by a uro who specializes in MFI. Our Re thought my DH's testosterone was in a normal range according to the tables that they look at. The uro said that the table he was comparing to was for men of an older age bracket, and that my DH's testosterone was low for his age. His first follow up SA after 11 weeks was Count: 4 million per ml, 40% motility, Morphology 1%. HIs volume was also double the previous SA, so overall a lot more sperm. We have another follow-up scheduled for May 9th, and the uro had high hopes for even better numbers. We are hoping to move into a range where we can try iui instead of having our only option being ivf with icsi

Good luck @TLooney17! And thanks for asking this @Iloveshanej. DH has his S/A Friday but three years ago they were borderline, so I'm nervous. It's good to know that there are options if it's bad.
@TLooney17 did you DH's morphology go down? My DH has very low testosterone. His urologist is suggesting Clomid after more SAs. Sorry for all the questions but thanks for answering :-)

His has always been between 1-2%. I asked the uro about it going down, and he said that technically there is very small difference between 1 and 2%. He said in all actually it is probably the same. They look at such a small sample of sperm for it to be totally accurate. I actually got pregnant on my own when my husband had 2% morph. The uro and RE seemed to think the morph is the least thing to be concerned about.

@iloveshanej we got numbers today! He went from about 3 million last SA to 4.8 million. Motility went from 2% to 38 and morphogy can't remember but same jump to significantly better. This was really good!!! Best one ever for him! This is what he used (4 pills a day which makes a one month supply half a month- but is how a lot of men with more severe spleen counts use it- depends on your hub's numbers if you wanted to do that), couldn't hurt to try it or look at it! https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000FKMKRG

Rainbow Surprise Baby due 05/26/2017
Good! It's so worth it! Our insurance covered the SA, but we would have had to go to a specific lab and it was a huge hassle. So, our RE offered a discount and did it for us for $50. Well worth it!
TTC #2 since 6/2010
10/2012 DH diagnosed with Epilepsy
A few failed IUIs summer 2012 and 2013.
DH taking clomid and waiting to see if he needs another vericocele repair.
Hoping for a 2015 baby or babies.
Wishing, hoping, waiting.
