TTC after 35

newbie intro

edited April 2014 in TTC after 35

Hello, newbie here! I have been lurking some of the boards here for a while and finally signed up with a screen name a few days ago. Here is some information about my husband and I…

I am not over 35, but my husband is. We have been TTC for 5 months now and I have been temping and charting for many many years now and we do not use OPKs at this time.

Husband has been taking meds for his thyroid since he was like 13 and recently had surgery for parathyroid issues. He had bloodwork done for the surgery and the Dr said his Testosterone levels were within the normal range. I did some research on my own and 'normal range' is lumped together for all men regardless of age which sounds silly as testosterone levels go down with age so it is dumb to lump it together! This is one of the websites I found: https://www.mens-hormonal-health.com/normal-testosterone-levels-in-men.html

I am sure this is flame worthy but my husband didn't know what his testosterone level was other then the Dr. saying he was fine and he would not look it up. DH and I know one another’s passwords to pretty much everything so one night I logged in an looked it up. He is just under 500. He is not where he should be for his age.

Since I am not 35 or over but my husband is, am I on the right board? How long should we keep trying before we take the next steps and what would the next step/steps be?

Looking forward to getting to know everyone and best of luck to everyone for their BFP!!

  • If you are close to 35 then this is where you should be. If not try the trying to get pregnant board.

  • Just because testosterone is in the normal range doesn't necessarily mean anything for sperm production.  My husband has had low testosterone and no sperm issues at all.  I have also seen ladies on here that have husbands with awesome testosterone levels and horrible semen analysis.  Only a semen analysis can tell you what is really going on.  Since your husband has had issues with his levels and thyroid it would be good to get a SA so you know if this will be an issue or not.  I would get on this first before any testing is ever done on you.  SA's are relatively cheap and with his history you might even get full insurance coverage.

  • Welcome! Can I ask how old you are?  If you are close to 35 then feel free to join us. If not, you may want to join another board like Trying to Get Preg or 3T to be around other women similar in age.  Just curious if you have had any testing done at this point since you've been trying for a little while now?

    GL to you!!

  • Welcome and GL. Love your screen name :)

I also wanted to add to some of the comments here... this is a very welcoming group of ladies, so don't feel offput by the suggestions of other boards. But there really is something different about hitting the AMA age as a woman, that you just won't experience, even with a DH who 35+. So, it's possible that other boards might be a better fit... especially since here you'd probably want to, out of respect, keep mentions of your "youthfulness" to a minimum :)

  • Welcome!! I would not worry too much about the testosterone levels really. I think most RE will want you to try naturally for at least a year before consultation but it all depends on you.

    Best wishes!!

  • Welcome and good luck
  • Best of luck to you and YH!

  • Welcome, and good luck!
  • Thanks everyone! I wasn't sure if the 35 and over was for the lady only as I didn't see clarification anywhere and I know it is not just females on these boards. I am almost 32 and I am not on here to flaunt being under 35. Since I am not over 35 this will be my last post on this board, thanks for answering my questions! No testing has been done yet as we have not been trying for over a year yet. Thanks again for your help :)
