job interview update

Last week the place that I had the phone interview and first round interview at started contacting my references. Yesterday, I got a message about setting up the 2nd interview and letting me know they will be contacting my current supervisor where I am working (I told them that out of respect for him I wanted to be able to let him know ahead of time that the call was coming). Second interview is scheduled for the 17th. I'm feeling relatively confident they will offer me the job particularly considering how in depth this interview process has been.  Fingers crossed!

Any tips about negotiating salary? I am currently earning towards the upper end of the range that they said they'd pay for this position. As much as I really want to switch jobs, I cannot afford a cut in pay. I have the luxury of not needing to jump on a job offer and I won't need to take benefits there since my husband has great insurance at his job at a really reasonable cost. Thanks in advance and any suggestions would be helpful.

Re: job interview update

  • Since I don't know what kind of range we are talking or exactly where you sit currently in that range it's hard to say...

I will assume that you are currently at 75% of the range for argument sake. I would ask for the top end or even (if I truly felt I was qualified enough) just a little bit over and then negotiate backwards. If I was going to ask for more than the range offered I would say I was hoping for no more than 10% more and state at the same time that I understand that $____ is the maximum offered. My husband did this and ended up getting the max.

I thought it was risky to me but it worked for him. We live in canada though and our unemployment rate isn't as high here.

What I would do would be to ask for the max and en tell them I can't afford to take a pay cut but hubby says that sounds too desperate.

I hope my rambling is helpful and not too confusing :s

  • I don't anything about negotiating, but wanted to say good luck! Hope you get it with a pay raise!
