Breastfeeding

Need your thoughts

Long story short - we fought back over the last 6 or 7 weeks from basically formula supplemented by BM to full time BF'ing. I thought things were going well, but then he didn't gain weight for a few weeks. Weighted feeds over a week confirmed he wasn't getting quite enough from me, so we started supplementing 2-6 oz a day based on his cues. In the meantime I started fenugreek and More Milk Plus and milk production increased a bit and supplementing dropped to 2-4 oz a day. Weight gain has been creeping up, but on the low side of average.

Weekend before last he suddenly started STTN from about 9-6:30. I hoped this as a good sign that he intake was adequate, but with STTN his gain this week was lower than desired.

Here's our general routine:

6:30 am - wake, BF. I know I can pump 5 oz after he STTN, but let's assume he's getting 4 to be safe
Daycare gives him (3) 4oz bottles of breastmilk, usually 9:30, 12:30, 3:30
6:00 pm - get home and BF. Based on knowing I generally pump an oz per hour I assume he's getting not much more than a couple oz, supplement 2 oz (BM or formula depending on what I've got on hand)
8 or 8:30ish - nurse again. He's ready to sleep at this point, but changing him wakes him enough to take both sides for a few letdowns

So based on my oz an hour pump production, I'm guessing his total intake currently to be about 22 oz. I'd like to get a couple more oz in. Or should we assume STTN is a good sign of adequate intake and wait it out a week to see how his weight is? If I'm going to try to squeeze in some more calories I'm not sure where to do it since he's not feeding at night...I could bump his daycare bottles to 4.5 oz. I'm just trying to avoid too much at one time since he has a history of reflux.

Sorry if that's all convoluted. Any thoughts on how to adjust are appreciated.

Re: Need your thoughts

  • I also would say that by this point if they're hungry they'll let you know.  But like everyone else said, if you're concerned a LC can help with the specifics of calorie intake/weight gain.  Good luck!
