Astraea

@bromios‌

I hope I did that right. You mentioned this name as a suggestion to someone. Talk to me about it. Why this spelling over Astraia? How do you pronounce it? (I can't find pronunciation anywhere). Are there any meanings/associations other than "star" and the Greek goddess of justice and innocence (again, according to BTN)?

This name has me intrigued....

Re: Astraea

  • Thank you both. I'm thinking Astraia is more likely to be pronounced correctly then. But the hubs vetoed them both anyway. Damn.

    Language is so interesting. When I read the name in the post I thought, that sounds like Estrella, which is star in Spanish. Then @bromios‌ confirmed that it has the same meaning in Latin. So, OP, could your DH get behind Estrella? Same pronunciation! On a similar note, do most people know that Stella means star?

    @bromios I ask because DD is Luna, but we really like Stella if we ever have a second daughter and I am concerned about the idea of moon & star!

    No :((

    In our discussion, I started with Estrella. I've always loved that word. Does it make sense to love a word? I don't know, but I do. But I feel like the Spanish double L makes people uncomfortable because it's pronounced so differently than it would be in English. And I love Estelle. But I have a bad name association with Stella. And I love the meaning. So Astraea seemed like a good option. The hubs agreed about the pronunciation and that it's a better option than Estrella. Then promptly vetoed all of them. Damn him!

    Hmm, how about Elena, Astrid, Leia, Esther, or Hester for names that sound kinda like Astraea/Estrella? And for just names I think you might like: Nieves (snow in Spanish), Helena, Mariela, Noelia, Sonia, Belén? ETA yes it makes sense to love a word! My favorite words in Spanish are crepúsculo (dusk) and frenesí (frenzy).

  • There are so many good options, it's so difficult to pick just one (at a time). I love Astrid and it's the name of a character from one of my favorite books (White Oleander). But it might be a GP name since, when it comes to finally choosing THE name, I tend to want to choose a long, beautiful, classic name with cute nn options (like my daughter Evangeline). Top contenders right now include Vienna (but a lot of my ITALIAN and AUSTRIAN family members said they immediately associate it with vienna sausages. Wtf?!) and Alexandra. I'm all over the damn place, but I just love names :)
    Thanks for your help and the thoughtful discussion.
