Cloth Diapering

leaking help

Hi, I'm mostly a lurker when I have time, lately not even that, but I really need some help today!!

We have been dealing with several issues lately, and just when I thought I resolved everything I just got a call from my mom (who watches DD) saying that 2 of her diapers today leaked.  X(

The issues actually started with leaks...it's always right near her crotch, on one side of the diaper.  Before I could even investigate and figure that out, DD got a rash that eventually turned into blisters.  We did coconut oil constantly but couldn't get it to heal, so I gave in and put her in disposables with butt paste for a couple days which helped.  While she was in disposables I washed all the diapers on hot 3 times, and then sunned them.  Within 2 days of putting them back on, her rash started to come back.  So we went back to disposables to clear it up, and this weekend I went to our local CD store for help.  They recommended I strip with RLR which I did yesterday.  I soaked all the diapers with RLR, then washed 3 more times on hot.  And now today, 2 have leaked.  We have mostly BG 4.0 & Freetimes, with a few Tots Bots, Alvas, and other randoms thrown in.  Today it was a BG Freetime and a Tots Bots that leaked, one first thing this morning and one this afternoon.

What am I missing here??  Why am i STILL having leaks after all of this, does it sound like a fit issue?  I thought the BGs might have been repelling, but since the tots bots leaked I'm not so sure because it's a completely different material.  Anyone have any suggestions?? I am going crazy!!

Re: leaking help

  • oh, and I forgot to mention... we have soft water (a water softener) and I use Country Save detergent.  My wash routine was a delicate cycle on warm/warm, a heavy cycle on hot/cold with 1/2 scoop detergent, and a cold rinse/spin cycle.  I was planning to switch it with my next wash to a cold rinse/spin, same hot wash, and 2 more cold rinse/spin and measure out 2 tbsp of detergent, per the lady at the local CD store's suggestion.

  • I'm not sure about the inserts, that's a good question I will have my mom check that next time.  Today is the first day in them after the RLR strip and so far no rash.

I also just got some thirsties hemp inserts to use for overnights - she wasn't leaking typically overnight but her diapers were majorly soaked in the morning (even with multiple BG newborn inserts stuffed in), and CD store lady suggested hemp instead, but just for overnight.  Tonight will be the first time trying them though.

  • Yes, just the MF inserts that come with the BGs.  I will definitely start checking the inserts when she leaks...that sounds like it could be the issue.

And ammonia is what I thought was causing most if not all of our problems up until now.  That is why I stripped and am planning to change my wash routine...I'm not sure if 2 tbsp is a lot less than 1/2 scoop, I haven't measured yet, but if it is then i hopefully that will solve that.

  • Does your LO walk? If her body has changed shape since, you might need to down a rise setting. I know it sounds backwards.

yes, actually she just started walking, and has slimmed down a bit.  I didn't even think of this!
