Pregnant after IF

Let's talk about the peeing of one's pants.

TMI. I'm going to put this out there.

How common is it to well...ahem....pee one's self? And how much is normal? I've found myself losing more and more control over my bladder with every passing week. At first it would just happen during sneezing and I could help control that by crossing my legs tightly when I felt a sneeze come on. But now I go to the restroom for a normal potty break and find that I may have lost a tiny bit even without realizing it, usually about a quarter size spot on the panties. And I'm sure it's pee, not CM. I have no recollection of how it got there. No sneezes, laughing, etc. I'm sure it's just breech-positioned baby girl dancing around on my bladder, but hoping I can get ahead of this before I find myself thinking my water broke when I really just royally peed my pants. I've heard stories and I know that's a potential reality.

For those of you who have experienced this, how bad did it ultimately end up getting? And what did you do to help yourself? Are poise pads daily about all I can do? Or will I need to resort to full-blown adult diapers at some point? I'm embarrassed and very hygienic about these sorts of things and want to make sure I'm doing all I can do to help this until baby girl gets here in August. Tips? Stories? Feel free to giggle. I'm trying to find the humor in it all and I'm glad I'm even at this point to laugh about!

  • ThoseThreeWords HAHAHAHA I'm dying about "sniss."  That's awesome!

liz4paws I can't really help you because this really isn't happening to me.  But I will share that it did happen to me once...a SNISS that is  (hahaha "sniss" I can't get over it).  Luckily I was at home and only a tiny bit came out, but I was like OH NO I hope this doesn't happen all the time now, as it was pretty early on in my pregnancy.  *knock on wood* all has been good since.

  • I haven't really peed myself per say, but I have a lot of discharge going on. I wear a light panty liner every day and it's much more comfortable than the unknown!

It's important to make sure you completely empty your bladder after you go pee. Lift up a little bit, bend forward, just try to get it all out lol.

    Also... kegels!

  • I don't have any advice, but I did have a friend who was convinced her water broke but in fact she had peed her pants.  And it was enough to warrant a change of clothes!

  • OMG - at only 10w5d with twins I am there already. Okay - the progesterone and estrace suppositories leave things generally a bit damp down there and in need of a pad (a liner won't do it for me)..... But also having a terrible cough for the past few weeks has really ramped it up.

I will fess up to the poise pads. I wear them just in case, because its awful to be trying to get just 5 more minutes in before a pee break and break out into a coughing fit..... That sort of business will leave me crying and ruin my day. A little insurance is good.

That said, I have already informed my partner that I will be getting a bladder lift surgery once this is done!

@ThoseThreeWords - I bought poise but haven't worn them regularly. I guess I'm in denial. I need to start going to SA meetings (snissers anonymous) or something and come to terms with the problem I have! That's it. Tomorrow I vow to start wearing them every day. Glad I'm not alone!!!

@FutureMrsW9 - It's so funny, I've been using the term "sniss" too since I saw it tossed around the Aug14 board a while ago. I use it in regular convo with DH and figured it was just a term everyone knew! There's also barf-iss, cough-iss, laugh-iss....you name it, you can -iss doing pretty much any activity while pregnant. :)

@Mrs.McIrish - I'm SO afraid of having to figure out the full blown astronaut diapers, but at this rate, it might happen! LOL

@katekat8721 - Yup, liners it is. The sad part is already do the lean-forward-to-get-it-all-out thing and it still happens! Kegels I could do more of. Good tip! Thanks.

@missvolvo - I've heard this story more than once, as early as 29 weeks even! I'm just WAITING for the day she bounces at just the right moment on just the right spot and I end up in L&D. That will be an awesome day - to be told "nah, you're not in labor. You just peed your pants." I'm half joking and half not. I think it's going to happen!

@Manada - I think I was having this even that early on! Crossing your legs pre-sneeze is a good starting defense but I'm seeing a liner is a good idea too. :) Good luck! I hope it doesn't get worse for you like it has for me!

  • I love that this is a conversation!  I'm just 18 weeks today and over the weekend I noticed that if I don't get a move on once I have the urge to go I'm going to have issues.  Today I went before I left work... got home (about a 15 minute drive) and went to grab the mail and then I was basically running into the house.  I didn't pee my pants but I definitely dribbled some.  As I'm typlng this I have to go again... ugh!  I better get up before I wet myself.  This is not fun at all... I have my a/s on Thursday and there is no way I can drink 32 oz of water and not go to the bathroom unless I wear a depends!

  • I have full-on peed myself twice.  I was sick with a bad cold at the beginning of 2nd tri and it came with a really awful cough.  Coughing made me gag and then I would puke.  Twice I finished puking and stood up and realize my pants were wet.  Like completely wet.  Ugh.  And I definitely dribbled every time I coughed.  I've peed myself a little on several other occasions, usually not enough to warrant a change of clothes.  Between pee leakage and CM, I am never without a liner!

I really need to do more kegels.

  • Ugh, I have had to deal with this!  I had the flu in January (when I was about 6 months along), and developed a terrible cough.  I peed a little every time I coughed or sneezed, and had to wear a pantiliner for a couple of weeks, day and night.  I heard Kegels helped, so I tried doing those and it seemed to help.  I thought I was past it, and then, lo and behold, I peed a little in bed the other day!  Ick!  I thought my water broke at first, but there weren't continual surges of fluid like when my water broke with DS, so I realized I had peed.  Luckily, DH has been sleeping in the guest room since he gets no sleep with all my tossing and turning.  So I just changed the sheets and now I'm just happy I only have 12 more days of baby pressing on my bladder!

  • Ahh, the sniss. It is so unfortunate and so unavoidable. I full on peed myself once when I was puking. Then when I got that cold a few weeks ago, I really struggled to avoid leakage when coughing.

One thing that does help is the kagels. But another kagel exercise that you can do is to stop your stream mid-pee. Of course, you let it go and make sure you really empty your entire bladder, but stopping a full-on stream mid-pee really works out the muscles. Don't be surprised if you can't stop it completely for the first few weeks you try.

I sneezed really hard and had to change my underwear....now I brace myself when I have to sneeze and cross my legs really tight like you said. I also bought panty liners and I think I'll start wearing them.
Then, last night I woke up to get sick. As I was vomiting, I felt pee trickle out of my boxers and down my leg. I got up and sure enough, there was a small puddle. I'm soooooo glad DH didn't wake up to check on me.

  • From about week 20 to 26 I had to use a panty liner because I was leaking like crazy.  At my 26 week ultrasound the tech showed us that LO was indeed using my bladder a trampoline and it was likely the reason that I was constantly wetting myself.  I started having BH contractions at week 26 too and with each BH I'd leak a little too.

I'm pretty sure that LO is still breech, but he's now sitting on his bum with his feet up rather than having an all day dance party.  I still leak if I sneeze and during stronger BH contractions, but I dont feel like I'm walking around smelling like a wet diaper...

But something else to look forward too....taking care of personal hygiene will get more difficult the rounder you get (unless you have monkey arms)...I'd recommend investing in some personal wipes to clean up with.
