Anyone have ovarian cysts while pregnant?

I got pregnant with injections and an IUI with my son and with this pregnancy.  I didn't have this issue last time, but on Friday I went in for an u/s (5w5d - ectopic history) and he said I have very large cysts on both of my ovaries.  The RE said this is common with the medication I was taking to get pregnant.

They suggested pelvic rest (didn't say it was required) but said if DH and I wanted to have sex we had to be very gentle because they could burst at any time.  They're getting more painful by the day and I'm assuming they're the reason I'm so freaking bloated.  Has anyone else had them?  Did yours dissolve or burst?  From what I've read either could happen, they could stay through my entire pregnancy, I've also read about ovaries getting twisted up between the uterus growing and problems with the cysts.

I didn't see my normal RE on Friday, I'll see him this Thursday for a follow up u/s and discuss it with him, but just wondered if anyone else had experience with these

Re: Anyone have ovarian cysts while pregnant?

  • Unfortunately, I do not have any answers, but I also have a cyst on my left ovary.  My doctor is monitoring it, but he said they typically go away on their own (which is my hope).  From what I've read, they seem to often go away around the 10th-12th week when the placenta takes over in fetal development.  My doctor didn't tell me the specific size, but he did say it was pushing on my ovary.  I have been having a lot of cramping on my left side and sometimes a sharp pain there when I stretch.  I'm anxiously waiting my next appointment and hoping it's either gone or at least shrinking in size.  Sending thoughts and prayers that yours does the same!

  • I don't have a whole lot to offer you other than to say you're not alone. I have 3 2-3cm cysts on my L ovary that are causing some discomfort/pressure in certain positions. I do have PCOS, so that's probably the reason for mine (paired with pregnancy hormones). Hope you find out more info and good luck!

  • I didn't know it - but apparently I had a cyst on one of my ovaries at my first u/s. It was gone by the second one 2 weeks later. Sorry you are feeling lousy! I hope everything resolves and/or you get more answers at your next appointment.

  • Thanks everyone and my bitchfest for the day is I can only sleep on my stomach for so long before my belly will get too big from the pregnancy and I can't do it right now because it presses on these cysts.  It freaking sucks that I can't sleep on my stomach right now :-(

  • I was told I had one at my u/s, but they didn't give much detail just that it is common and will probably dissolve on its own.

  • I have a dermoid cyst on one of my ovaries, and my doctor said they'll monitor it during the pregnancy, and then we can talk about removal about 6-12 months after I have the baby. It hasn't caused me any pain or anything, and she didn't seem concerned, so I'm not worried about it. I'm sorry that yours are painful. :(
  • I have a 3.3cm cyst on my left ovary. My dr didn't seem very concerned about the cyst though. I wish I had more advise to offer you!

  • I went for my u/s today (I'm at 8w 6d) and the technician found 3 cysts. They are 2.4, 2.8 and 5.3 cm. The technician said it's very common for the body to produce cysts to support the pregnancy, her concern was that three is too many. However she said there's nothing to do but monitor.
When I asked my doctor he wasn't concerned at all, he said we'll keep an eye on them but as long as they are not causing severe pain I should be ok. Hope that info helps!
  • I have multiple cysts, but my doctor didn't seem concerned at all. Maybe I should ask again at my next appointment.
