Anyone else living with a "happy spitter"?

Hey Ladies- I have an EBF 7 week old who has been deemed a happy spitter....gaining weight, doesn't seem to be bothered (mostly) by spit up, so pedi is not concerned.  I, however, bring it up at every appt and continue to be shocked by the frequency (20-30 times/day) and quantity of spit up.  I know that it often looks like more....but still, it seems like A LOT.  He's only bothered when it wakes him up or comes out his nose.  I've tried burping more frequently, holding him upright after eating (for as long as he'll tolerate it).  I'm hoping some STMs can give some tips to handle all the spit up!!!  We've graduated from traditional burp clothes to hand towels because they are more absorbent, but it is still getting everywhere (carpet, couch, sheets etc.).  Its gotten to the point where I don't want anyone else to hold him because I fear the huge amount of spew they will be covered in! I don't mind the constant laundry or always being covered in sour milk---but am looking for tips on how to manage this!  When can I expect it to die down??

  • I hate to say this, but DS was a happy spitter and continued spitting up for a looooong time. He'd spit up baby food and partially digested solids (not as frequently as when he was strictly breastfed, but it wasn't uncommon). To this day, he has an extremely sensitive gag reflex (he's 4 now), and I've actually caused him to puke a little when I'm brushing his teeth. We just had to get used to carrying around towels, and basically being prepared to clean up after each meal.

  • My oldest was like that, and still sometimes when he bends over will "reflux" if he's had too much to drink the few minutes before. He wore big bibs (think dishtowel size, over his head) with plastic backing until he was 2. Anyone who held him would put a towel over their chest and lap first. It just was what it was. He was EBF too.

  • Yup, same here!  Lately, my little guy (not every time) has been grunting and flexing his belly muscles as if to sit up, then spews.  Its not a lot, but its still a good amount.  I too, resist anyone else from burping him.
  • My little guy is the same. The doctor said he has reflux. You should invest in cloth diapers as your burb cloth. They are a lot thicker and bigger, and this way you wont ruin your hand towels. I also keep a bib on him all day so I don't have to change his clothes as much. I  don't put him directly down on the couch or floor, I put a blanket under him to make cleaning up easier. I change his diaper right before I feed him. My husband also read somewhere that pacifiers help (I'm not really sure if thats true but he usually has one in his mouth all the time because he loves them)
