When to get a swingset?

This is for veteran moms out there. R is already pretty rambunctious and we were thinking of getting him some kind of bigger outdoor gift for his birthday. Little Tikes has a pretty cool castle play house with a little slide BUT Walmart now has a nice cedar swing set for the same price. It has a bigger slide, a place for a sandbox, activity table and swings. Obviously he's now too little for the ladder to climb but the rest he could do with our help. Is it worth getting it now because it's such a great price or just wait until maybe next year? Other things I'm considering: My neighborhood doesn't have a playground. we live in the south so he could use it for much of the year and we don't have bad winters (snows once if we're lucky). TIA

Re: When to get a swingset?

  • We just got and put  up a baby swing hanging from our deck for now.

  • I would get it. DS loves to swing and slide especially watching his big sister do it.

  • I would wait until next year but we have several nice parks really close to home.

Since there is nothing near you I would buy something fairly small that would be used for a couple of years and then buy something for older kids next year or the year after.

If the set you like would still be fun as R gets much older I would get it.
  • I would get it. LO can swing now and be using the slide really soon.

  • I plan to get a Step 2 swingset. It's smaller and she can use it sooner, but won't last as long as she'll outgrow it in a few years.

  • @delino the Step 2 stuff is amazing. I have the table (& some other items) and everything comes off it.

We're doing (a real) one this year....mainly for our 2 and a half year old. A lot of the items (like tricycle) we got DS1 for his 1st birthday and Christmas he is just now getting into. I know it's exciting...but some things it might be better to wait on.

  • I think we're going to get them a big kid swing set (very much like the one you described) for their 1st birthday. The reviews I read for the Little Tikes one weren't good and I don't want to spend money on something that won't last long (and then have to get rid of it). I'm going to buy the infant swings which can be swapped out with the big kid swings so we can use the sandbox and swings this summer. We have parks near us, but they're always busy on nice days and I don't think my mom is comfortable taking them out of their stroller at a busy park by herself. And if they're at home, our dog can run around the backyard too.

  • @emmy236 Is this one you are talking about ?

We have been looking for swing sets too and I didn't even think about looking at walmart!! The price really can't be beat. I'd say go for it !!

  • Yup! That's the one. It says it's a little difficult to assemble and you need power tools but my husband works in the building industry so he can get any tool and my father in law can build anything. Plus, we're having all the family over Memorial Day so I thought it could he nice for all the guys to put it together. Between my brothers and our dad's it shouldn't be that bad. The guys in our family seem to like doing that kind of stuff and it keeps them out of my kitchen when I'm trying to cook
