Soft sole shoes

I can't remember who else said their kiddo had cubby feet. SAK? Unaveragejane??

Anyway, I'm wanting to get some soft sole shoes or robeez for my guy since he'll be walking soon... But don't want to waste $$ if they won't fit. Also, how is the sizing?

The 12-18 month should fit right?? No way I'd have to jump to the 18-24 month, right??

I know of someone who couldn't get her little guys feet into anything and got him a pair of Robeez. They have elastic keeping them together so they stretch pretty well. I'm on mobile so I can't see how old your LO is but if he's just learning to walk I don't think the 18-24s would fit - they run a bit big from what I've seen.

I will say though that they aren't really the best for walking. They get holes in them fairly easily and they are too expensive to keep buying (at least here they are). My younger brother had really wide feet and we got him Buster Brown shoes for when he started walking and they were a good fit and they lasted.

  • I've never heard of buster brown shoes...are they soft sole?

He's 9 months, but likes to bear weight on his legs.

  • I was going to add, I just moved him up to 12-24 month socks since he's feet kept coming out of the 3-12 month ones. And they fit like a dream!
    That's what spurred my curiousity.

  • Do you have a stride rite near you? I'd go to a store front and try them.

They also make a more structured soft sole shoe for early walkers.

Clark's also makes baby shoes for early walkers. I'm pretty sure they are around the same price.

  • Someone on my BMB raved lately about Stride Rite's crib shoes/early walker shoes.

I used the knock-off Robeez before she could walk, and then got some actual shoes from Stride Rite once she wanted to be walking around places outside of home. Her feet aren't chubby, though (I actually have the opposite problem, and stride rite are the only "real" soft sole shoe small enough to fit her), but they make wides.

  • We also just got a nice pair of soft sole shoes (the crib/crawler stage) last weekend. Stride rite also has BOGO half off right now.

The buster browns are a regular walking shoe (the ones we had anyway. I'm not sure about the whole line). Now that you mention the size of his feet I'm not sure about the Robeez. Is there anywhere that you could go to try a pair on? I also agree about stride rites. They are great little shoes!

  • I've got robeez. Nice soft sole. I've got 6 to 12 months, and they are big on him.
I got a good price at bru. I think 50% off. That wad a while ago though.

  • I think Robeez is owned by stride rite. They have a printable size chart online. I've seen them half price on stealnetwork.com (baby steals). I also like Jack & Lily. If you can sew, you can make some for less than $5, using leather scraps & a regular sewing machine. I use the free pattern on tackyliving.com. So far, mine are still in great shape on DD2.

I haven't even given shoes for lo much thought yet since he's not even standing when held in standing position alll the time yet...he still picks up his feet or collapses when weight is put on his legs.....so walking is a ways off yet.

Eta: I'm with SAK in leaving lo shoeless until he is walking outside........ or until the PT recommends putting shoes on him, whichever comes first.

  • We used Robeez when DS1 first started walking. They fit wide feet very well. I also really, really like the See Kai Run Smaller shoes with the soft sole. They are great for outside. The soles are soft and pliable but they have little round rubber spots that help with traction. These shoes run wide.

  • Cade's feet are too fat to fit into shoes. I'm looking into getting him some skidders. Poor kid has chubby feet.

  • I have the opposite problem. My kids feet aren't chunky and he has ankles. All of his socks are huge on his feet.

I'll get him a pair of Robeez when he hits the 6 month mark. For some odd reason my daughter would always take her socks off, but would keep the Robeez on.

  • My kids do have fat feet, especially M. Good memory, yl! As far as soft soles shoes, we do have a few pair of those robeeze knock offs and they're fine. Old navy also makes reasonably priced shoes that run wide. We have a Velcro pair that we loved for the first two boys. but honestly until kids are walking around outside on their own I find shoes to be a waste. It's good for their development to be able to feel the floor as much as possible, and while they're cute they're just one more thing to lose or pay for and then outgrow immediately. I really prefer to just leave my babies in socks until they start walking outside on their own. Sorry I'm not more helpful
I try to keep him barefoot/socks as much as I can. But DS started walking in December, in the middle of the awful winter. So I needed something to help keep his feet warm, and keep them dry when he wanted to walk around when we were inside wherever we were going (like church). Otherwise, I would just have soggy baby feet/socks whenever we went out.

When are you supposed to put them in a harder soled shoe? DS has been walking for over 3mo now, and is pretty good. With the weather finally getting nice out, now I'm worried about his feet hurting from stepping on rocks/mulch/whatever else. I got him a pair of sandals a couple weeks ago that had some flex, but weren't as stiff as other shoes I've seen. He looked at his feet, freaked out, and cried.
  • Yep, my kid has super chunky feet. He wears an extra wide in Stride Rite shoes. Several friends gave us Robeez and other brands, but they were rarely wide enough. When he started walking and it was warm enough to be outside, I took him to SR for a fitting. They are crazy expensive IMO, but they seem to fit him a long time. I recently bought him two cheap pairs of shoes (one from Walmart and one from Target), and after less than 2 months, I can't get the Velcro fastened on them anymore even though he has a long way to go before outgrowing the length. (My kid's feet just get taller and wider, not really longer. I have no idea what that's about!)

  • DD has super chubby feet and we have a few pair of the Robeez.  They run a bit big, she can fit into the 6-12 months still (toes almost at the end), and the 12-18 are kind of big, but they stay on her feet.  We have a pair of regular velcro shoes from Target in a size 5, and some sandals in a size 4, to give you an idea of the size of her feet.  Robeez does have a printable foot sizing chart and she measures about a 4 in those.

  • Watch for Stride Rite on Zulily! They were starting at $15.99 on there, which I thought was reasonable!

One more question... Anyone else's kid curl their toes under?

Every pair that we've tried on where you slide the foot into, he curls his toes under. So they don't lay flat.

Stride right actually made some Velcro ones.. That they opened up so you could place the foot into. So those seemed better. But I didn't like any of the prints..

So my question was. Are robeez roomy enough for to uncurl toes?
    image
  • Yep, DS always curled his toes up when he was your LO's age. It was a PITA to get shoes on him for the longest time. It helped to find shoes that opened way out like you said. Sandals were also a little easier b/c I could poke my finger in the side and get his foot flattened out...plus not having socks meant his foot slid in a little better. I don't think he walked around with his toes curled up, so if you can get the foot in there, you may be okay.
