TTC after 35

intro: loss mentioned....

I wanted to check in with the over 40 group. I don't know that I ever intro'd here. It's been a while of not being on this board if I did, so here goes.
I'm 41, hubby is almost 49. We were married last year after his VR. We got pg pretty quick, then had a loss at 17wks. Told we could ttc next cycle. That has been since July 2013. Saw an RE in Jan, he said fat and over 40 gives me 2 % chance live birth on my own. I can get 12% chance IVF and he recommends donor eggs.
So here I am. I'd like to hang out here as well as TTCAL if I may :-)

Re: intro: loss mentioned....

  • Hello!
Your RE's comment about fat and over 40...why so harsh?  I'm heavy as well and although I know losing weight (even just a little) will help me considerably, my RE is not negative about my weight.
So sorry to hear about your loss.
    Good luck:)

  • Welcome and I'm overweight. Being healthy is the key no matter what the scale says. Boo on bad bedside manners of your RE. Don't let that knucklehead discourage you.

Welcome and I am so very sorry for your loss...big hugs. Sorry for what the RE told you. I met with an RE and decided to skip IVF and go straight to DE because of my age (43 at the time) and only having $ to do one or the other. Good luck to you and YH on deciding what to do. It's hard I'm sure..

    ME:46 MH:44 DE IVF 2014
Met with RE 4/11. 2 IUI's BFN. DE best option. Switched clinics to do "shared" program. Had to retake all tests and a mamm that put me behind and then on a DE waiting list for 12 months. Picked a donor!! (10/13/13) Got matched. Estimated transfer in December. After 2.5 years of patiently waiting I will finally cycle....can hardly believe it. DE cycle got cancelled. One of her tests came back positive.  Waiting for another donor. Donor picked!! (1/18/14)

    DE IVF #1 (4/26) BFN  DE FET #1 (6/4) BFP! Beta 1=339 Beta 2=852 Beta 3=9957 EDD 2/22/15!!

Welcome, and sorry for your losses. I agree with pps about your RE. I hope he's basing those stats on something more substantial than just your age and weight (and that he's not always like that)!

Best of luck, whatever you decide to do!

  • So very sorry for your loss. I hope you come up with a game plan that you are happy and comfortable with. Although your doctor didn't choose the correct wording he was giving you the facts and you need those to make the best choice for how to move foreword in ttc.
But I do hope you are in that 2% and you can rub it in his face. :P

  • I am 40 and know what you are going through so big hugs. I do not know where you are based but here in Switzerland you cannot get egg donations, we are trying this month with IUI plus drugs so let's see what happens.
    Best wishes!!!

  • Welcome to the board. I am sorry for your loss and that you have to deal with the doctor's comments. Physicians should be supportive, as we never know what type of positive mental support can do for TTC.

  • Welcome to the board. I'm with PPs; that RE was nasty and needs some manners.

I know lots of overweight people who have not had fertility issues. I know lots of "normal" weight people who have. Your doc was doubly insensitive, and I'd be in the market for a new one.

All that aside; this is a supportive place, full of knowledgeable people. You've come to the right place.
