Separating to wash?

I've seen several people mention separating different fabric types when washing diapers. Example, washing microfiber separate from bamboo. This is probably a dumb question so go ahead and laugh but why is there a need to separate? When I CD'd the first time, over 5 years ago, I just washed everything together so I'm out of the loop. Thanks for the input!
