My mom got diagnosed with colon cancer one week ago today. She is set to have surgery Tuesday to remove half of her colon. She will be in the hospital for 5 days and then start chemo.
My 3.5 year old is extremely intelligent and perceptive. He already knows something is wrong. Does anyone have experience telling a child that grandma has cancer and she won't be well for a while? She is the boys caregiver while I sleep after work so there will be a huge change in their routine. Any help is appreciated.

Re: How do I tell my 3.5 year old that Meemaw has cancer?
In addition to what pps have said, I would tell DS that grandma's tummy may be sore if he's going to see her so he can be prepared to be gentle with her if possible.
T&P that she has an excellent outcome once her treatments are done.
I would just keep the explanations simple for now. Hugs
I don't know for sure what if say, but I'd imagine I'd go with "the truth" minus hard facts. "Grandma is really sick and we're gonna have to be extra nice and give extra love to her to help make her feel better..."
Sending big hugs and lots of love your way.
