How do I tell my 3.5 year old that Meemaw has cancer?

My mom got diagnosed with colon cancer one week ago today. She is set to have surgery Tuesday to remove half of her colon. She will be in the hospital for 5 days and then start chemo.

My 3.5 year old is extremely intelligent and perceptive. He already knows something is wrong. Does anyone have experience telling a child that grandma has cancer and she won't be well for a while? She is the boys caregiver while I sleep after work so there will be a huge change in their routine. Any help is appreciated.

  • In addition to what pps have said, I would tell DS that grandma's tummy may be sore if he's going to see her so he can be prepared to be gentle with her if possible.

T&P that she has an excellent outcome once her treatments are done.

I just wanted to tell you that I am thinking of your mom and your whole family.

I would just keep the explanations simple for now. Hugs <3

  • I'm sorry! Cancer fucking blows :(

I don't know for sure what if say, but I'd imagine I'd go with "the truth" minus hard facts. "Grandma is really sick and we're gonna have to be extra nice and give extra love to her to help make her feel better..."
  • I'm so sorry. Big hugs to you and positive thoughts for your mom.
  • I agree with MBK about saying she is sick and needs to go to the hospital to get better. Skype or Facetime when your mother is up for it would probably help put his mind at ease.

Sending big hugs and lots of love your way.
  • I'm sorry. No advice but I'll be keeping your mom in my thoughts.
  • I'm so sorry about your mom. I'd keep it pretty simple, just say gma is sick and will be for a while. I don't think you need to try to explain it much further than that.
